Football: FIFA Club World Cup Second Round
Sunday 29th June 2025 - Kick Off 12pm (5pm British Time)
This game is live on TV
Paris Saint-Germain
Luis Enrique is the latest manager/player to be a little critical about the state of play for his football team at the Club World Cup and there will be a lot of national team managers taking note. The World Cup will be played here in twelve months time, but Enrique pointed out the difficulty his Paris Saint-Germain team have had in playing their natural game on the turf that has been laid out in Stadiums.
Despite those issues, a late goal from Atletico Madrid helped Paris Saint-Germain top their Group ahead of Botafogo and that after losing to the Brazilian team in the middle of the three fixtures played. Wins over Atletico Madrid and Seattle Sounders with clean sheets have just given the European Champions something to build upon, although the challenges look to come thick and fast in this side of the Knock Out Bracket.
Paris Saint-Germain have won 7 of their last 8 games in all competitions with the exception being that surprising defeat to Botafogo. In the main, Luis Enrique will be happy with what he has seen from his players and he could soon have Ousmane Dembele back to lead the line, which only makes Paris Saint-Germain that much more dangerous.
Inter Miami
There was plenty of criticism attached to the criteria used to have Inter Miami participate in the Club World Cup with many believing that Lionel Messi could not be left out by the FIFA bigwigs. The opening performance suggested Inter Miami had something of a 'competition winner' vibe to being involved at the tournament, but the players have shown more in the last couple of games.
Beating Porto pushed Inter Miami to the brink of the Second Round after the opening draw with Al Ahly, and they were 2-0 ahead of Palmeiras in the final Group fixture. Winning the section would have meant playing Botafogo instead of the European Champions and Inter Miami would have been in what looks to be the 'weaker' half of the draw, but they were pegged back by Palmeiras and ultimately will settle for a place in the Second Round.
Inter Miami are unbeaten in 6 games in all competitions, although half of those have ended in stalemate. There is room for improvement defensively as far as the MLS team are concerned, but Inter Miami have shown some attacking bite in the fixtures against Porto and Palmeiras to offer themselves some real belief ahead of this monster test.
Head to Head
This is the first competitive fixture between these clubs.
Prediction
The conditions and the playing surface may work as something of an 'equaliser' in this Second Round fixture, but Paris Saint-Germain's comfortable win over Seattle Sounders shows the gap that should exist between these teams.
Headlines will speak about Lionel Messi's reunion with his former club, but he cannot do everything himself and Inter Miami are going to have to show some real resilience.
Defensively there has been room to exploit against the MLS team and this Paris Saint-Germain team are more than capable of doing that.
You would be much more comfortable backing the European Champions if this was a fixture being played on their own continent, but even the playing surface is unlikely to completely push Paris Saint-Germain out of their rhythm.
They have already shown they can win games in different ways in this tournament and Paris Saint-Germain should be able to create big chances in this match. If they get into a position where Inter Miami are chasing the game, Paris Saint-Germain have shown they have the pace and quality in the final third to really hurt opponents and they should be able to secure a relatively comfortable win.
The odds seem to be shortening all of the time for a Paris Saint-Germain win by two or more goals, but that is the most likely outcome of this Second Round tie.
