Scottish League Two hosts, Edinburgh City, will face a tough opening game of the group stage of this season’s League Cup when the competition gets underway on Friday night as they welcome Scottish Championship outfit Partick Thistle to the Meadowbank Stadium.
Edinburgh City finished in 3rd place at the end of last season’s League Two campaign which earned them a place in the League One promotion/relegation play-offs where they were up against East Fife.
Sadly for The Citizens they went out at the semi-final stage to East Fife losing 3-1 on aggregate over two legs so the hosts will be plying their trade once again in the Scottish fourth tier this season where they’ll be hoping to go one step better and gain promotion to League One.
Having registered just two wins from their last seven games in all competitions though, Edinburgh City face a tough night at the office on Friday night.
Partick Thistle also featured in the promotion/relegation play-offs for a place in the Scottish Premiership at the end of last season as The Jags finished in 4th place in the Scottish Championship at the conclusion of the regular season.
Partick Thistle then registered a 2-1 win over two legs against 3rd placed Ayr United in the play-off quarter-finals but then fell to a heavy 4-0 loss on aggregate against eventually promoted Livingston, so they too will be keen to go one step better this time around.
The visitors finished runners-up to Group G winners Motherwell in last season’s League Cup by a narrow one-point margin while Friday night’s counterparts, Edinburgh City, finished rock bottom of the group having lost all four of their group games.
