Last week was not one to remember for Blackburn Rovers and their fans as the Lancashire club suffered two defeats within seven days, while Birmingham City were held to a 1-1 draw at home by former Premier League side Ipswich Town in their opening game of the season.
Blackburn Rovers were dealt an opening day 1-0 loss away from home at West Brom in the Championship but worse was to follow as Valérien Ismaël’s side were sent crashing out of the EFL Cup in the 1st round by League One newcomers Bradford City in a 2-1 defeat.
Despite holding home advantage at Ewood Park for this Saturday’s encounter against Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers will be desperate to avoid a fourth defeat on the trot as Rovers also suffered a 3-1 loss away at Dutch side NEC in their final game of pre-season.
Birmingham City were left feeling aggrieved at having all three points snatched away from them when they entertained Ipswich Town at St Andrews in the opening game of this new Championship season after a highly controversial penalty decision.
The Blues were dominant throughout against the Tractor Boys but in the end had to settle for a point in a 1-1 draw after Ipswich Town scored from the spot, but nevertheless, Chris Davies’ side showed they are more than a match for the newly relegated teams from the Premier League.
Indeed, Birmingham City outplayed Sheffield United in their midweek EFL Cup fixture with The Blues running out 2-1 winners but in truth the margin of victory could and should have been larger as they spurned numerous goalscoring opportunities.
