Newly promoted Championship outfit Arbroath will play host to Scottish Premiership visitors St Mirren at Gayfield Park on Saturday afternoon in this opening fixture in Group D of the Scottish League Cup with both sides keen to produce an early season victory.
Arbroath claimed the Scottish League One title at the end of last season’s campaign as The Red Lichties finished seven points clear of runners-up Cove Rangers despite failing to win any of their final three league matches of the season.
Losses to Annan Athletic and Inverness Caledonian Thistle overshadowed a draw with Queen of the South while subsequent results in recent club friendlies against Dundee (2-0 loss) and Dundee United (1-1) mean the hosts have now failed to win any of their last five matches overall.
Arbroath also failed to emerge from last season’s Group D in the League Cup, finishing in 3rd place after one win, one draw but two losses.
St Mirren finished in a solid mid-table position at the end of the regular Scottish Premiership season which ensured their place in the Championship Round group but The Saints remained in 6th place at the conclusion of the season.
Nevertheless, St Mirren finished last season’s domestic top flight campaign in promising fashion as The Saints put together a six-match unbeaten sequence in the season run-in, claiming three wins and three draws.
Important points picked up in draws with Rangers, Hibernian and Celtic were boosted by recording victories against the likes of Ross County, Aberdeen and Dundee United respectively, while pre-season friendlies have seen St Mirren register wins against Dumbarton, MK Dons and Airdrieonians.
