World Cup News :: Russia stun Spain to reach World Cup Quarter-Finals

Hosts Russia pulled off the biggest shock of the 2018 World Cup so far as they beat Spain 4-3 in the first penalty shootout of the tournament to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in 48 years.

The score was locked at 1-1 at the end of extra time, goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was Russia's penalty hero, denying Koke and then Iago Aspas to spark scenes of delirious celebration at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.

Russia came into the tournament ranked just 70th in the FIFA rankings, while Spain were in 10th, and this upset was not something that was anticipated be many in the stadium beforehand.

Spain dominated much of the game with 79%b possession and 24 shots to 7 but did not really look to be able to find a way to win as the match went to a penalty shoot-out

Russia will now face Croatia in the last eight in Sochi on Saturday.
