Euro 2008 News :: Frei injury a blow for Switzerland

Switzerland fear they will be without captain and record goalscorer Alexander Frei for the remainder of Euro 2008 due to injury.

Frei limped out of Switzerland's 0-1 defeat to Czech Republic at St Jakob-Park and it is now suspected that the Borussia Dortmund star will be sidelined for the rest of the tournament.

The 28-year-old left the field in Basel in tears shortly before the half-time interval following a collision with Czech defender Zdenek Grygera.

And Swiss team doctor Adrian Knup has admitted that Frei - who took his place on the bench with crutches for the second half - has sustained ligament damage.

Asked if that would mean Frei would not be able to play against Turkey in their next Group A match on Wednesday, Switzerland boss Kobi Kuhn replied: "Unfortunately, it looks like that's the case."

Frei has scored 35 goals in 59 appearances for Switzerland to make him his country's leading all-time leading goalscorer.
