Substitute Michael Chopra put his personal problems behind him to bag two late goals to give Sunderland a 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough in a frantic derby at the Stadium of Light.

Boro had wasted a chance to claim the lead when Nyron Nosworthy bundled over Jeremie Aliadiere in the box with 15 minutes left.

England winger Stewart Downing wasted that opportunity by blazing the spot-kick over the bar before Chopra piled on the misery for the away side with his late brace.

The game was goalless for 81 minutes before the former Newcastle striker broke the deadlock after latching on to a Kieran Richardson through-ball and slotting home past Boro goalkeeper Ross Turnbull.

Chopra had come on late in the first half to replace Teemu Tainio, who had gone off with a shoulder injury.

Chopra completed the win for the home side two minutes into injury time when he tapped home after some unselfish play from Steed Malbranque.
