Liverpool endured a frustrating afternoon just a week after beating champions Manchester United as they could only manage a goalless draw against a stubborn Stoke side.

Steven Gerrard - who scored twice against Marseille in the Champions League on Tuesday - thought he had rounded off a good week with his 100th goal for the club after two minutes but his free-kick was ruled out for offside against Dirk Kuyt.

Robbie Keane was restored to the starting line-up after being omitted against Marseille but it was Fernando Torres who spurned a golden opportunity to give the hosts the lead just after the hour when he saw his shot from 12 yards blocked by Leon Cort.
