Spanish La Liga News :: Real Madrid poised to lift 31st title

Real Madrid can claim a 31st Spanish title success this weekend if they beat Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona and Villarreal fail to win.

There are five games left Villarreal are 10 points behind Real with Barcelona another point adrift.

Real's players appeared to think that the job was already done last weekend, going by their celebrations after beating Racing Santander.

Last year Real secured the championship on the final day of the season after a tense comeback win at Real Mallorca, so completing the task with a few games to spare would be welcome relief for the players and supporters.

It would be a first managerial title for German coach Bernd Schuster, in his first season after replacing Fabio Capello in the summer.

"You can't sound the victory bells just yet, although we're only a small step away," said goalkeeper Iker Casillas. "We've been on top from the very start and I think we deserve to win the title again."
