Real Madrid attempts to win their first Copa del Rey since 1993 are over after an extraordinary away-goals defeat by third-tier side Real Unión Club.

Real Union, who won the Copa del Rey three times between 1918 and 1927 but now play at the same level as Madrid's reserve side, won the first leg 3-2 at home though it seemed that this lead would be overturned at the Santiago Bernabeu.

However Real Union increased that advantage early on through Paul Abasolo. Raul González replied six minutes before half-time only for Asier Salcedo to score soon after the break to give Union a 2-1 lead.

Raul swiftly responded and Alberto Bueno scored again midway through the second half to level the tie and give Madrid a 3-2 lead on the night.

It seemed Real Union were out when Raul completed his hat-trick with five minutes left but there was a dramatic last twist as Eneko Romo gave the visitors the lead on away goals and a last 16 berth.
