UEFA Cup News :: Weir adds to Rangers Extended Injury List

Rangers defender David Weir has been ruled out of Thursday's UEFA Cup semi-final second-leg tie at Fiorentina.

The 37-year-old limped out of Sunday's 3-2 Scotish Premier League defeat against city rivals Celtic with a groin strain and medical scans have confirmed he is unlikely to be fit in time to play at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

"I don't think he has much chance at all of playing on Thursday," said manager Walter Smith. In Weir's absence, Christian Dailly could partner Carlos Cuellar at centre-back.

Rangers travel to Italy having been held to a goalless draw in the opener last week, and were already burdened by injury problems before this latest setback.

Allan McGregor, Lee McCulloch, Chris Burke, Steven Naismith and Charlie Adam all look to be sidelined.

On the positive side, they welcome back Barry Ferguson and Kevin Thomson after the pair missed the first leg through suspension, while Steven Davis is on course to recover from a groin strain.
