Aust. A-League News :: Queensland Roar renamed for 2009/10 Australian A-League

Queensland's foundation A-League franchise has been officially renamed the Brisbane Roar.

The name change comes after the inclusion of two other Queensland clubs the North Queensland Fury and Gold Coast United, thus expanding the Australian national football competition to 10 teams.

The "Roar" franchise, whose current coach is the former Socceroo Frank Farina, has been known as the Queensland Roar since its inception in 2004 and competed under that title since the inaugural A-League season in 2005/06.

The adoption of the city of Brisbane in its name arrives on the end of an off-season of financial turmoil at the Ballymore-based franchise during which staff have been offloaded and the founding chief executive officer, Lawrence Oudendyk, has resigned.

It took the game's governing body, Football Federation Australia (FFA), to step in to save the cash-strapped club by buying a 51 percent controlling share of the Roar late last month.

Brisbane Roar play their first game of next season on August 8 in the highly anticipated first local derby against the Gold Coast at Suncorp Stadium.
