Russian League News :: Zenit beat CSKA Moscow 2-0 to move into 3rd place

Zenit St Petersburg jumped into third spot in the Russian Premier League with a 2-0 win Saturday over CSKA Moscow.

Zenit and CSKA trading a raft of threatening moves at St Petersburg's packed 21.500-seater Petrovsky stadium throughout the first half but both sides missed what chances fell their way until the final minute of the half when the hosts were awarded a penalty.

The home team's Serbian striker Mateja Kezman promptly lifted Zenit 1-0 up with a precise spotkick after the Red Army side's skipper Sergei Ignashevich had been penalised for handball in his box.

After the break CSKA picked up steam and began testing the hosts' defence, trying to pull level, but they failed to save the day as Zenit defended stoutly replying on the counter-attacks.

And in the 87th minute Zenit midfielder Vladimir Bystrov added a clincher with a 20-metre shot to secure the hosts well-deserved win.
