Ghana kept African world cup hopes alive after Asamoah Gyan smashed home an extra-time winner to knock out the USA.

Ghana started extremely quickly and after Kevin-Prince Boateng gave them an early 6th minute lead in Rustenburg with a low strike that beat Tim Howard at the near post.

The African side dominated the first half hour, with some energetic running, but the Americans came back into the game after the break and equalised in the 62nd minute through a Landon Donovan penalty.

The United States seemed the most likely winners of the match at that stage, but seemed reluctant to press forward and the 90 minutes ended all square.

Ghana grabbed the lead in the 3rd minute of extra-time when Gyan showed strength to control a long ball forward with his chest and volley a shot from the edge of the penalty area despite the close marking of two defenders.

The US side tried manfully to get bakc into the game, and created some half chances, but Ghana survived some nervous final moments to seal a famous win.

Ghana will play Uruguay on 2 July in the Quarter-finals.
