There’s midweek action in the Brazilian top flight as Gremio take on Palmeiras at the Arena do Grêmio with both teams keen to further improve their positions in the Serie A table and in turn strengthen their claims for places in the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana respectively.

Gremio were dealt a 3-2 loss away from home at Botafogo last time out in the domestic top flight and recent results overall in Serie A have been something of a mixed bag for the upcoming hosts as Mano Menezes’ side have won two, drawn once but lost four of their last seven games.

Despite picking up wins against Juventude and Vasco da Gama, Gremio have also slipped to defeats to Bahia, Corinthians, Cruzeiro and Botafogo - only one of which was incurred on home soil though, while four of these last seven games also resulted in Over 2.5 goals.

Palmeiras may occupy a lofty 2nd place position in the Brazilian Serie A table but the visitors have experienced a concerining downturn in form in recent weeks, suffering two losses and being involved in two draws.

Defeats at the hands of Mirassol and Santos together with being held to stalemates by Vitoria and Fluminense have stalled Abel Ferreira’s side’s momentum so the visitors will be keen to return to winning ways against Gremio in order to keep their Copa Libertadores aspirations on track.

An away record of 9-2-5 23/18 suggests Palmeiras stand a decent chance of at least avoiding defeat at the Arena do Grêmio.
