Preview
They did sweep them out of the post-season, but generally over the last nine months the Los Angeles Dodgers (15-20) will recognise what kind of threat the Arizona Diamondbacks (24-11) are building out west. The Diamondbacks have continued their dominance of the regular season games between these teams and they have propelled themselves to the top of the National League West.
This is a Division the Los Angeles Dodgers have dominated in recent years, but injuries and a World Series hangover has positioned them to make a poorer start to the 2018 season than expected. They have now lost three in a row having been beaten in the first of a two game set with a Divisional rival and face an Arizona team who are playing with the confidence of having won three in a row.
Arizona have also won eight of the eleven regular season meetings between the teams this season and they give the ball to Patrick Corbin who looks like being a star pitcher in the making. Corbin has a 4-0 record with a 2.15 ERA this season and he should be confident of facing the Los Angeles Dodgers having allowed a single earned run in over 13 innings pitched against them across two starts in 2018.
With a bullpen that produces the best ERA in the Major Leagues so far this season, Arizona will believe they have the pitching crew to win another game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Dodgers have to counter with Alex Wood who is 0-3 with a 3.83 ERA so far this season. Injuries are not helping the starting rotation and Wood has not really been given the kind of run support he would have wanted in his starts so far.
Wood is 5-4 with a 3.09 ERA in his fourteen previous appearances against the Arizona Diamondbacks but he will be seeing them for the first time in 2018.
Prediction
The Arizona Diamondbacks look to have the edge when it comes to momentum as well as their starting pitcher going to the mound.
Patrick Corbin can set them up to win this game as the underdog and the Arizona bullpen will want to show the Dodgers they are better than they did last time Corbin took to the mound.
