There isn't any real ambition for the Miami Marlins (58-62) to push into the Playoffs, but someone has yet to let the players know. Six games sit between the Marlins and the Wild Card positions, but they have just snapped a four game losing run and this is a team that is still playing with a lot of belief.
They complete this inter-League set with the Cleveland Guardians (62-57) on Thursday and all of these games are beginning to matter.
The first two games have been split, but that has kept the Guardians right on the coat-tails of the New York Yankees for the Wild Card spots in the American League. Unlike the Yankees, the Guardians have been playing with a lot of consistency either side of the All Star Game, although they are 6.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers within the Central Division.
Cleveland will be looking to bounce back from the loss on Wednesday by giving the ball to Tanner Bibee and hoping the pitcher can find his way back to his best form on the mound. Two solid seasons to begin his Major League career meant Bibee and Cleveland were able to work on an extension, but 2025 has been much tougher for him all around.
Tanner Bibee has a 8-9 record and 4.60 ERA in twenty-three starts made for the the Guardians and he has already been handed the most losses in a single season. The ERA is also way above the last two seasons, and it is running at 5.90 across his last nine starts, although Bibee can be grateful to the batting lineup for improving his win-loss record.
Despite allowing at least three runs in each of his last four starts and only once making it out of the Sixth Inning, Tanner Bibee is 3-0 in that time.
He will be starting against the Miami Marlins for the first time and the Guardians will need more from Tanner Bibee, especially if the road starter continues his fine recent form.
Edward Cabrera is earning the start for the Marlins and has a 6-5 record and 3.08 ERA in twenty starts made in 2025. He has been one out away from throwing at least 6 Innings in each of his last four starts and, most impressively, Edward Cabrera has allowed a single earned run in each of those outings.
This is the first time Cabrera will be throwing against the Cleveland Guardians.
The Marlins snapped a three game losing run to Cleveland when winning on Wednesday evening.
Prediction
There are some hot teams in the Major League that you do not want to step in front of, but the Cleveland Guardians may be worth opposing in this inter-League series decider.
Tanner Bibee has been struggling for consistency and the Miami Marlins batting lineup have been showing some fire.
To back them up, Edward Cabrera's recent form on the mound is hard to ignore and the starter can set things up for a flaky bullpen to avoid a full collapse.
