An exciting three horse race at the top of the American League East continues to be fought out as we approach the final month of the regular season. All three are expected to be involved in the Playoffs, barring a significant dip in form in September, but winning the Division may mean entry into the Divisional Round of the post-season rather than the Wild Card Series.

The Toronto Blue Jays are leading the way, but the Boston Red Sox (73-60) have won five of their last six games and are just 4 games behind. They are currently playing a set with the Baltimore Orioles (60-72) and the Red Sox have won the first two of the four game series to keep the pressure on the Blue Jays and the New York Yankees.

Winning those two games also snapped a four game losing run to the Orioles and the Red Sox will be confident that their next two starting pitchers can keep the momentum going.

First up is Brayan Bello who has a 10-6 record and 3.07 ERA in his twenty-three appearances this season and who has made twenty-two of those in starts.

The fourth season in the Major League is very much on course of being the best Bello has produced and there has been little sign of late season wilting.

He did give up five runs to the San Diego Padres earlier this month, but Brayan Bello has bounced back to allow just two runs in over 13 Innings pitched since then. Anyone concerned that the Padres outing might have dented some of the confidence will have been given plenty of reason to maintain hope around this pitcher when Bello threw 7 Innings and kept the New York Yankees from moving the scoreboard last time out.

Brayan Bello has pitched against the Baltimore Orioles once this season and allowed two runs in 4 Innings thrown, while not factoring into the decision. He threw 6 Innings and gave up a single run the last time Bello pitched in this ballpark twelve months ago and the Red Sox will have full belief that their starter can lay a positive foundation for success in this game.

The Orioles have lost five of their last six games in what has been an underwhelming season overall and this is likely to be a game in which they make full use of the bullpen.

It is Dietrich Enns who will open up on the mound and he has a 0-1 record and 3.97 ERA in eight appearances for the Orioles since arriving here in a trade with the Detroit Tigers. Earlier this season, Enns made seven appearances for the American League Central leaders and two of those were in starts, while he held a 1-1 record and 5.60 ERA.

Major League experience is pretty limited for Dietrich Enns, but he has pitched in Japan and South Korea.

In his time with the Orioles, Enns has primarily been used out of the bullpen and deep into games and the likelihood is that he will not be asked to go more than a couple of Innings here.

Dietrich Enns had two mixed starts for the Detroit Tigers this season- he threw 5 Innings without giving up a single run in th efirst, but was roughed up for seven runs in 4 Innings thrown in the second.

He threw a single Inning against the Boston Red Sox last week and allowed one run in his time on the mound. Prior to that, Dietrich Enns threw 5 relief Innings against the Red Sox as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays in 2021 and gave up six runs.

Prediction

We have seen in the Playoffs in recent times that teams employing 'bullpen games' have had considerable successes.

That is likely going to be a tactic employed again in October, but it may be asking a lot of the struggling Baltimore Orioles to get through this game against the Boston Red Sox the same way.

With Brayan Bello in top form, the road team are set for a third win in a row against this Divisional rival.
