Time is running out for the Detroit Tigers if they want to find a way to earn a spot in the American League Championship Series. After beating the Cleveland Guardians in the Wild Card Round, some suggested the Tigers had moved past the late regular season slump and taking Game 1 of this Divisional Round Series only backed up that feeling.
However, the Seattle Mariners are a well balanced and strong looking roster and there has been no panic in their dugout.
Instead, the Mariners have won back to back games and now need to win just one of the last two games to earn the spot in the Championship Series instead of the Tigers.
There is so much leaning in favour of the Mariners right now with the batting lineup producing much more than a long slumping Detroit lineup, while the starting pitching has set them up very early. In the last couple of games, the Mariners have been leading 2-0 and 5-1 at the bottom of the Sixth Inning and the relievers have done just enough to hold onto those leads.
Bryce Miller is next up for the Mariners and it has to be noted that he had a difficult year overall, while he is also pitching in the Playoffs for the first time. He did not face the Tigers in the regular season and Miller finished with a 4-6 record and 5.68 ERA in eighteen starts made for Seattle.
September proved to be a tough month and Bryce Miller finished with a 0-1 record from five starts, while he has allowed at least three runs in his last four in a row. That could mean the Mariners are keeping an eye on the pitcher and making sure the bullpen are ready to go perhaps even earlier than when they were deployed in the Fifth Inning in Game 2.
One concern for Bryce Miller has to be the fact he has allowed at least one Home Run in eleven of his last twelve starts.
The Detroit batting lineup will be hoping to find a spark and that is also going to be something that Casey Mize may need as he prepares for his second Playoff start in this post-season. The pitcher allowed a single run in 3 Innings thrown against the Cleveland Guardians in Game 2 of the Wild Card Round, although Mize did not factor into the decision, while Casey Mize had a 2-1 record in September from the five starts made and held a 3.49 ERA in those outings.
Casey Mize had two mixed starts against the Seattle Mariners- he was one out away from pitching 6 completed Innings and holding them scoreless on the road, but the most recent start was at Comerica Park and Mize allowed six runs in 3 Innings in July.
Prediction
Both starting pitchers will be under some pressure to find their spots and this is a game where the bullpens will be asked to come in pretty quickly.
The Tigers still have hope.
If they can win, they are likely to have Tarik Skubal on the mound for the Game 5 decider, but that means seeing the batting lineup come alive.
The Mariners have no real concerns about their own with the big hitters finding the moments to step up and you have to stick with the road team to find a way to come through, even if Bryce Miller is unable to contain the Detroit Tigers completely.
Seattle should be able to get to Casey Mize and the form of the two batting lineups means the lean has to be with the Mariners to secure the Divisional Round Series win.
Prop bettors may look at some of the Home Run markets when you think of the issues that both Bryce Miller and Casey Mize have had keeping the ball inside the park.
The home pitcher has allowed at least one Home Run in four of his last five starts and Jorge Polanco could make hay with his 6-16 record against Casey Mize. Not only has Polanco hit two Home Runs in this Series, both in Game 1, but he has two Home Runs against Mize in the past too and can be backed at 6.25 to secure at least one on Wednesday.
On the other side, the Tigers slumping batting lineup is facing a starting pitcher who has been giving up the deep ball in eleven of his last twelve starts. Bryce Miller has not been seen by this lineup in 2025, but Riley Greene needs to find a spark to help in the middle of the order.
He has a 2-6 record against Bryce Miller and Riley Greene may be worth backing at 4.75 for a deep shot, even if the majority of his Home Runs were on the road.
