Two National League teams continue a series to be played over the weekend and the pre-season expectations will have shifted to something more real at this stage of the campaign. The halfway mark of the regular season is fast approaching and the Miami Marlins (38-38) are on course to surpass those expectations, while the San Francisco Giants (31-44) have been one of the big disappointments.
Both could end up being selling teams at the trade deadline, but the Marlins may be more ready to take a shot at the Playoffs if they can maintain some of the recent momentum.
The Marlins will give the ball to Max Meyer after beating the San Francisco Giants on Friday and this is a pitcher who has been making big headlines in South Florida. The first four seasons in the Major Leagues have been a mixed bag for Max Meyer, but he is 7-0 with a 2.75 ERA in fifteen starts in 2026 and Meyer may finally be living up to his Draft position.
The last start in May saw Max Meyer roughed up for five earned runs in 6 Innings thrown against the New York Mets, but he was not a factor in the final decision. Credit has to be given to Meyer for bouncing back in June with a 2-0 record and a 1.96 ERA in three starts for the Marlins, while he did not give up an earned run against the San Francisco Giants in 5 Innings thrown earlier this season.
San Francisco continue this series having seen the three game winning run snapped and this is a season when they were hoping to challenge for a spot in the Playoff, but instead are sitting thirteen games under 0.500.
The Giants will turn to Trevor McDonald on Saturday and the pitcher has a 2-4 record and 4.64 ERA in eight starts this season in his third season in the Majors.
In the previous two seasons, Trevor McDonald made just four appearances at this level and two of those had been in starts and so the Giants will have to be patient with this pitcher.
Patience also means understanding that Trevor McDonald is going to have some inconsistent performances on the mound- in three June starts, McDonald has allowed three or more runs twice, but also contained the Chicago Cubs to a single run in 5 Innings thrown.
Walks have been an issue with three handed out in each of the three June starts as Trevor McDonald prepares to face Miami for the first time.
These teams have split four games played this season, but the Miami Marlins have won five of the last seven against the San Francisco Giants.
Prediction
The Miami Marlins will need Max Meyer to go relatively deep into this game to protect a taxed bullpen, but they will have faith in a pitcher who is finally looking like the high Draft Pick that he is.
Max Meyer has already limited San Francisco Giants once this season the Marlins batting lineup may be able to get after Trevor McDonald and give the home team the edge as they look to move back above 0.500.
The Giants had won three in a row before Friday, but have been struggling for much of the season and Miami can edge past them.
