Preview
Eight years have passed since the Arizona Diamondbacks (63-56) last beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the season series, but they remain 7.5 games behind the National League West leaders. Despite that gap, the Diamondbacks will be taking a lot of confidence of getting the better of the World Series favourites and they are firmly in the mix for a Wild Card berth in the National League.
However, it is going to be a competitive race for the top three Wild Card positions and series like this one against the Colorado Rockies (46-72) cannot be overlooked. Instead, the Diamondbacks are well aware they need to focus to make sure they put the wins on the board that will keep them on track for a spot in the post-season, especially with only a game lead over the San Diego Padres outside of the Wild Card positions.
Arizona will give the ball to a returning Michael Soroka who has missed the last couple of months with an injury.
Those have been a feature of his career in the Major League and the frustration for Michael Soroka will be the fact he had begun 2026 in really good form. He returns with an 8-3 record and 3.07 ERA from fifteen starts made this season and Michael Soroka was on course for his best Major League marks since his sophomore season at this level in 2019.
Michael Soroka last pitched in the middle of June when he completed a single Inning before withdrawing and spending time on the sidelines. He had allowed just two runs in the prior two starts, which covered 14 Innings, while Michael Soroka returns against the Colorado Rockies having produced a 1-0 record and a 2.31 ERA from two starts against them made back in May.
The Rockies are not concerned about the Playoff picture and have lost five of the last six games as they continue to assess the roster ahead of the 2027 season.
They will give the ball to Gabriel Hughes, a rookie who has a 0-3 record and 4.25 ERA in six appearances in 2026 of which five have been in starts.
Gabriel Hughes had lasted at least 5 completed Innings and not given up more than three runs in any of the opening four starts made for the Rockies. However, he was knocked around for five runs when pitching into the Sixth Inning earlier this month against the Tampa Bay Rays, although Hughes did not factor into the decision in that game.
He is facing the Arizona Diamondbacks for the first time, but these two National League West rivals have faced each other seven times in 2026.
It is the Diamondbacks who have won five of those meetings.
Prediction
There is plenty to like about this Arizona Diamondbacks roster and they have shown how dangerous they could be IF they make the post-season.
A lot of hard work will have to be covered if the Diamondbacks are to do that and they cannot afford to drop too many games against some of the weaker teams in the Major League.
Michael Soroka returning from an almost two month layoff could be a boost, but the Diamondbacks may want him on a pitch count.
Even then, they can earn some success against the rookie Gabriel Hughes and that may give Arizona the opportunity to win this opening game by a couple of runs at the least.
The Pick :
Arizona Diamondbacks 6-3 Colorado Rockies
