It felt like Game 5 could be a pivotal contest in this American League Championship Series and the Tampa Bay Rays edged to the victory to take the lead over the Cleveland Guardians for the first time.
They are now big favourites to progress to the World Series, although the Rays will not take anything for granted even with two games to be hosted at Tropicana Field. Earlier in this Championship Series, the Rays did split two home games against the Cleveland Guardians and that would be enough to see them through to face the Milwaukee Brewers, although the Guardians may yet feel they can impact the Series having won a number of road Playoff games already.
A decision has been made by the Guardians to use the bullpen to try and get them through Game 6 and then turn the ball over to Gavin Williams if they can force a Game 7. All options are on the line when it comes to a 'win or go home' contest, but Cleveland have to think beyond Game 6 as they look to rally from the brink of elimination for a second Series in a row.
There has to be some confidence earned from the fact that the Tampa Bay Rays have scored more than three runs in just one of the five games played against the Cleveland Guardians in the post-season.
However, the Rays managed to put twelve Hits on the board on Monday and that would usually lead to a lot more than the three runs scored as they were one big Hit away from really breaking the game over.
Credit has to be given to the Cleveland bullpen for keeping the team competitive and those relievers are going to need to dig deep to keep them alive in the Championship Series.
Tampa Bay will give the ball to Freddy Peralta who has been rejuvenated since picking up this uniform and is going to be extra motivated to try and punch the Rays into the World Series where his former team are already guaranteed to play.
Freddy Peralta has started twice in the post-season and has also helped the Rays record a couple more Outs when needed in Game 4 of the Championship Series. He has put together an impressive 0.79 ERA and that comes after putting together a strong September for the Tampa Bay Rays, which will give the team confidence.
Of course you have to consider the fact that Peralta is now going to be seen by the Cleveland batting lineup for a third time in very quick order and that can help them identify any tips that the pitcher may have. That may be grasping at straws, but the Guardians have been a stronger team on the road and they may yet have one more bit of resiliency in them to prolong this Series.
Scoring enough runs may come down to how well Cleveland can perform against Freddy Peralta early on and try and force him out of the game and get into the bullpen.
Prediction
Seventeen Hits led to just four runs being scored in Game 5, but the familiarity of the batters with the pitchers they are facing means they can take big swings at the ball.
It has not been a Series powered by those at the plate, but this Game 6 looks like one that could see both the Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians do enough to combine to surpass the total line set.
