Monday 18th August 2014 – Kickoff time 20:00
Monday Night Football comes from Turf Moor as Chelsea comes visiting and they starts as favourites to get the win over the Premiership new boys.
Burnley are the bookies favourites to go down this season but one thing is for certain is that they don't lack the fighting spirit.
Burnley are making their Premiership appearance after the other times they had been in the Premiership which was back in the 2009/10 season. Back then they were beaten by Stoke on the opening day. However, they did beat Manchester United in their first home game of the season.
But Manager Sean Dyche has kept his faith from the side that did well in the Championship to once again do well in the Premiership.Burnley lost both matches against Chelsea in their previous Premier league season and that 2009/10 season was the last time that they met each other. Surprisingly, Burnley do lead the head to head records against Chelsea 36-32 with 22 draws. Other then that they have have only met one other time (in the Carling Cup) since 1983.
It has to be said that it was the goals of Danny Ings and Sam Vokes who gain them promotion. However, Vokes misses out through injury, leaving Ings as the player to watch out for the home side.
However, it has to be noted that Chelsea have won all five matches they have played on the opening weekend of a Premier League season under manager Jose Mourinho. Also Chelsea haven’t lost on the opening day of a season since 1998/99. Since then they have managed thirteen wins and two draws in the fifteen matches played. Also no other team has won more points on the first weekend of a Premier League season than Chelsea has managed.
The players to watch out for Chelsea will no doubt be Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas. It should be noted that Fabregas scored in each of his two previous league games against Burnley. So while Fabregas is likely to score here don't forget that Costa scored two goals in a midweek friendly at Stamford Bridge so he cannot be left out either.
Also not forgetting that Mourinho's side have conceded just 10 goals in their last 23 Premier League and Petr Cech has the second highest save percentage in the top flight last term.
