Introduction:
The final will be played on neutral ground in Oeiras where Sporting Lisbon will start as the favourites.No doubt that Aves is a surprise finalist as they were struggling for survival in the Championships. Sporting on the other hand dropped to second in the standings in the last championship round. So it is no surprise that the team from Lisbon has missed out on the Champions League next season. In making it to the elite rank this season, they had only one goal and that is to stay in the top division this season. The Championships was their main priority while the Cup is just secondary. But somehow they got their break in the Cup and they made the best use of it.
In their first three rounds, they managed to win away from home against teams from the lower division, and only in the quarterfinals they had an opponent from the top division, which was the unpleasant Rio Ave, whom they managed to beat after a penalty shoot out.
Then in the semi finals they came up against a team from the lower division which was Caldas. They won the first leg played at home by 1-0, but then they lost by 1-0 and needed extra time to progress to the finals, where they managed to win by 2-1. Now this is their best chance for the first trophy in the club's history, but it will not be easy as they will come up against a formidable opponent. In their last match they were beaten by Chavez and they played with a mixed team but it does not matter to them as they had already secured survival.
Sporting Lisbon
They will start this match as the huge favourites and if they do not win this trophy then they will be considered to have had a poor season indeed as they could only managed to finish third in the league. Even before the Championships came to an end, it was evident that they could not catch Porto at the top and the chances of winning the title has evaporated.
In their final match they came up against Benfica which was a battle for the second place which leads to the Champions League, and as the match ended without any goals it suited Benfica who are now in second spot. Then they need to defeat Maritimo in their last match but then they were surprisingly beaten 2-1 and that spoiled everything for them.
Now they can only look forward to the Europa League, which obviously did not appeased the fans of the club. That resulted in the fans going into the dressing room and physically attacking the players. As a result striker Dost suffered physical injury but he should still be able to play this match.
In the semi finals Sporting Lisbon needed to go all the way to a penalty shoot out to beat leaders Porto. That was considered a final before the final so now they will have a much easier task.
