Watford
All credit has to be given to Javi Gracia because every time Watford look to be slipping down the Premier League table he is able to guide them to a big win. On Saturday that came at the London Stadium, but Watford will have to be better defensively if they are going to find a way to upset Chelsea in the last of the Boxing Day games from the Premier League.
The three points earned moved Watford up to 7th in the Premier League table and they are just a couple of points behind Manchester United above them. They have a decent record at Vicarage Road where Watford are 5-0-4 in the Premier League having scored 14 goals and conceded 15.
Watford are unbeaten in their last 3 Premier League games and they have beaten Cardiff City and West Ham United while scoring at least twice in all of those games. They have been beaten in 4 of their last 6 games at Vicarage Road with the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City all winning here.
Daryl Janmaat is the closest player that looks to be returning to the squad, but it should mainly be the same players who headed to the London Stadium on Saturday.
Chelsea
There were a lot of confused faces in the stands and on the field with the performance Chelsea produced in their 0-1 home defeat to Leicester City on Saturday. Antonio Rudiger was the most brutally honest as he assessed the defeat and Maurizio Sarri will likely have been demanding a response from his players ahead of this short trip to Watford.
The defeat to Leicester City saw Chelsea remain in 4th place in the Premier League table, but the title challenge looks beyond them. More worrying is the fact they are now level on points with Arsenal and allowed Manchester United to close to 8 points behind them with a couple of away games to come for Chelsea. The Blues have a 5-1-2 record away from Stamford Bridge in the Premier League where they have scored 16 goals and conceded 7.
Chelsea had been unbeaten in 4 games in all competitions and had won 3 of those since the defeat to Wolves, but suffered a big setback on Saturday. They did recently end a run of 3 away games without a win in all competitions by beating Brighton 1-2 at the Amex Stadium, but Chelsea also need a response from the home loss last time out.
Alvaro Morata is hoping to return to the squad in time for this fixture.
Head to Head
Both Chelsea and Watford won the home Premier League game against the other last season with The Hornets stunning Chelsea in a 4-1 win at Vicarage Road.
Watford had not won any of 5 home games against Chelsea prior to that win, while they had lost 3 of their last 4 here against The Blues.
Prediction
The television selections for the two late afternoon games on Boxing Day from the Premier League look like very good ones on paper especially for the neutral.
That means I am expecting to see goals in both of those games.
After Brighton host Arsenal, Watford will have the chance to host Chelsea and they will be looking to build on the upset Leicester City secured at Stamford Bridge.
Watford are a dangerous team when at their best and I would expect them to have a go at a Chelsea team that must be feeling a little vulnerable. Defensively Chelsea have really been having a hard time of late and Watford showed against Manchester City that they can give anyone trouble when really at it.
However they have not been the best defensively themselves and that should mean Chelsea have a chance to bounce back from the defeat on Saturday. They have not been the most convincing away from home, but Chelsea have managed to find a way to goal and I think they have talented players in the final third that can create and take their chances when they come.
Games between Watford and Chelsea were very exciting last season with plenty of goals scored and I think this one has the makings of another that can head in that direction. I am not sure the home team will score four times like they did in each Premier League game last season, but I do think the attacking players can create chances and at least share out three here.
