Huddersfield Town
No one associated with Huddersfield Town will ever forget what David Wagner did for the club in guiding them back into the top flight and keeping them there for more than one season against all the odds. It was a real surprise to see Wagner leave his post as manager earlier in the week, but it sounds like Wagner made the decision himself with Huddersfield Town almost certainly going back down to the Championship.
The draw at Cardiff City was the last match David Wagner managed and it left Huddersfield Town in 20th place in the Premier League table and 8 points from the teams outside of the bottom three. A 1-2-8 record at home where Huddersfield Town have scored 5 goals and conceded 16 was always going to be difficult to overcome.
Huddersfield Town had lost 9 in a row in all competitions before the draw with Cardiff City, but that result means they have not won any of their last 10 games. The Terriers have not won at home since beating Fulham 1-0 in early November and the biggest worry is the run of 4 straight losses which is sending them straight towards relegation.
Aaron Mooy could return for the next Premier League game, but this one has come too soon for him.
Manchester City
The win over Liverpool was absolutely huge for Manchester City in their bid to retain the Premier League title and it has sparked them into some strong form which has seen them hammer a number of opponents. Granted most of those were in the Cup competitions against lower League opposition, but this looks to be another mismatch on paper and Manchester City should at least be able to keep up with Liverpool who are expected to win on Saturday.
Going into this weekend Manchester City are 4 points behind Liverpool in the Premier League table in what is effectively a two horse race for the title. The points have mainly been lost away from home where Manchester City have a 6-2-2 record in the League, but they play two of the current bottom three on their travels in back to back Premier League fixtures.
Manchester City have won 5 games in a row since stunning back to back losses to Crystal Palace and Leicester City either side of Christmas and they were comfortable winners over Wolves at home last time out. They had not won any of 3 away games in all competitions and had lost consecutive Premier League games on their travels before the 1-3 win at Southampton just prior to the New Year.
Vincent Kompany is unlikely to be risked in this fixture, while Benjamin Mendy could return for the FA Cup tie against Burnley next weekend.
Head to Head
Manchester City beat Huddersfield Town 6-1 at home back in August.
They did need to come from behind and score a late winner to secure a 1-2 win at the John Smith's Stadium last season, while the season before Manchester City could only earn a goalless draw in the FA Cup here.
Prediction
David Wagner surprisingly left his job as Huddersfield Town manager last week and it means preparations for this fixture against the defending Champions have perhaps been a little disrupted.
It sounds like Wagner decided to leave rather than being pushed as Huddersfield Town look certain to be relegated at this stage of the season. The club look like they have accepted their fate and instead will begin work on making sure they can challenge for an immediate return to the Premier League.
There may be some trepidation with which the players approach this game knowing what Manchester City have just done to Rotherham United and Burton Albion from a lower League. Huddersfield Town are effectively lower League opposition too and they will sympathise with those clubs having lost 6-1 at the Etihad Stadium earlier this season.
They won't lose by that many again as Huddersfield Town have been much more solid defensively at home. Chelsea did win 0-3 here on the opening weekend, but both Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool won by narrower margins than that and Huddersfield Town will look to contain Manchester City for as long as possible.
Unfortunately they look to be playing Manchester City at a time when their attacking players are confident and firing in front of goals. An early goal for the visitors could really open things up for Manchester City and Pep Guardiola will be demanding his players make this much more comfortable than wins at the likes of Watford and Southampton have been in the last couple of months.
In both games Manchester City allowed an opponent to hang around, but the form of late suggests they won't let that happen and I think they can match the margin that Chelsea won by at this ground. It is a very big spread which Manchester City have only covered in 2 of their 6 away wins, but this looks a good chance for them to do that.
