Burnley
One more win will likely have Burnley preparing for another season in the Premier League, but some will be looking up the standings and see the potential for a return to European Football. Last season being in the Europa League Qualifiers did not help the stretched Burnley squad in the Premier League, but the fans would love to have another adventure following their club.
Sean Dyche is only looking for a strong end to the season to make sure Burnley are still progressing as a club under his watch. He has done a fantastic job in his time at Turf Moor, although Dyche's style is perhaps not so pleasing to Chairmen at other clubs who may need a new manager. Recent results have taken Burnley up to 9th in the Premier League table and just 4 points behind Manchester United in 5th place, while they bring in a 7-1-6 record from games played at Turf Moor.
Burnley might have been beaten in the FA Cup Fourth Round, but they are unbeaten in 6 Premier League games and have won 4 of those to move away from any relegation battle. The side have won 3 of their last 5 games at Turf Moor in all competitions and have only suffered a defeat to Norwich City in the Cup in that time.
Ashley Barnes is probably still a week away from being involved in the first team activities.
Tottenham Hotspur
Injuries are clearly not helping Jose Mourinho at Tottenham Hotspur, but the style of play is already beginning to grate on some fans that have been used to watching much more swashbuckling displays from their team during the Mauricio Pochettino era in charge. Being beaten in the FA Cup Fifth Round during the week is another blow for Jose Mourinho and he is already seemingly at odds with the board having suggested he can only take one of the next two games completely serious.
The second of those is in the Champions League Last 16 Second Leg coming up during the week, but first Tottenham Hotspur have to try and improve their 7th place in the Premier League table when visiting Burnley. They are only 5 points behind Chelsea in the Champions League places, but Spurs have a poor 3-5-6 record away from home in the Premier League which has been holding them back.
Tottenham Hotspur needed a huge helping hand from Aston Villa to win 2-3 late on there three weeks ago, but since then they have lost 3 in a row in all competitions. They managed to avoid defeat in normal time during the week, but were still dumped out of the FA Cup on Penalties and confidence can't be in a great position. The side had been unbeaten in 4 away games in all competitions, but that run was ended in the 2-1 loss at Stamford Bridge which was never as close as the final scoreline would suggest.
Hugo Lloris, Ryan Sessegnon and Juan Marcos Foyth are all doubts for this one, while Moussa Sissoko, Harry Kane and Hueng-Min Son remain long-term issues. Eric Dier was filmed confronting fans in the stands on Wednesday and he is unlikely to be involved in this fixture.
Head to Head
Tottenham Hotspur crushed Burnley 5-0 at home back in December.
Burnley had not won any of 4 home games against Tottenham Hotspur and had lost back to back fixtures at Turf Moor against them, but they did snap that run by winning this corresponding fixture 2-1 last season.
Prediction
The live game on Saturday evening comes from Turf Moor and it is a huge test for Jose Mourinho and his Tottenham Hotspur team who have been in a miserable run of form.
They had lost 3 in a row in all competitions prior to the FA Cup Fifth Round tie against Norwich City and Tottenham Hotspur have found themselves dumped out of that on Penalties. Injuries are piling up to the point that Mourinho has suggested he is going to speak to the board and ask them which competition he wants to prioritise this week with a Premier League and Champions League fixture to be played.
After losing 0-1 at home to Leipzig it could be argued the Premier League has to be the priority for Tottenham Hotspur who can close the gap to 4th placed Chelsea by winning twenty-four hours before The Blues are due to kick off against Everton. That makes this game even more important for Spurs to try and regain some lost momentum, but Burnley are anything but a soft touch and especially if the focus is not at 100%.
Tottenham Hotspur will create chances against this Burnley team, but I have little doubt the home team are going to do the same against a team that has just 3 away clean sheets in 20 games played in all competitions (and one of those was at League Two Colchester United). However the other side of the coin shows that Tottenham Hotspur have only failed to score in 4 of those 20 away games and I do think they can cause problems for their hosts too.
Burnley have been in the better form and they have narrowed into the home favourites- winning 4 of 6 Premier League games will do that- and I do think they are the more likely winners on the day.
In saying that I do think the defensive issues have not been underlined as much as they should have been and it may take two goals to win the game. Backing at least three goals to be shared out at odds against is a very appealing price, and 4 of the last 6 between Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur have ended that way.
1-1 is perhaps the most dangerous scoreline, but I can see there being enough chances on the day to see the total goals hitting at least three goals.
