Football: UEFA Nations League
5th September 2020 – Kickoff time 20:45 [Telia Parken, Denmark]
Introduction:
Belgium, currently the Number 1 rabked team in the world travel to Denmark to begin their Nations League campaign this Saturday. Belgium, also known as The Red Devils, have a squad full of talented players and will start this match as the favourites to pick up the win here.
Denmark
No doubt this will be a very difficult match for the host as they welcome the world Number 1 team Belgium in their Nations League opener this weekend. Denmark will hope to cause an upset here as the visitors have yet to match their lofty status with any silverware.
Even though the chances of that are slim, Danish Dynamite coach Kasper Hjulmand will hope his players can catch their visitors cold after more than nine months without international football as things came to a stop due to the corona virus outbreak worldwide. Denmark were on a fantastic 15-match unbeaten run before the coronavirus pandemic struck the world of football, with that run involving double headers against the likes of Switzerland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.
That fantastic run was enugh to secure Denmark’s automatic qualification for the postponed Euro 2020.
The player to watch here will be Christian Eriksen. He has struggled to impress since moving from Tottenham to Inter Milan back in January. Still the Danish Captain will be looking to impress here.
Belgium
Roberto Martinez has named a strong squad for this match, with the likes of Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne all in the side.
Belgium managed a perfect qualification record of 10 wins from 10 games. They were one of only two teams, alongside Italy, to manage that feat, scoring 40 goals and conceding only three in the process. However it must be said that Russia were the only dangerous team in a group that also featured Scotland, Cyprus, Kazakhstan and San Marino. So they did not come up against any very difficult opponents it must be said.
Still, Belgium have shown their professionalism in beating all opponents that came their way since they threw away a 2-0 lead over Switzerland to crash out of the last Nations League after a 5-2 defeat back in November 2018.
They will start as the clear favourites on Saturday and it would be a big surprise if they fail to win this match.
The player to watch here will be Eden Hazard. The Belgium Captain has struggled since his move from Chelsea to Real Madrid last season. No doubt he is still among the world’s best on his day though and he will be keen to prove his doubters wrong and hit the back of the net here.
Past Meetings
The last time they played against each other was back in 2000 and then played to a thrilling 2-2 draw then in Copenhagen. The match was remembered for legendary Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel scoring from the penalty spot in that friendly match.
