Liverpool
Some changes were made to the starting eleven, but Liverpool still had a strong enough team to beat Porto 2-0 at home in the Champions League. They have already progressed to the Last 16 as Group Winners, but the victory was important to maintain momentum and Liverpool will be looking for a third win in a row at Anfield since the November international break concluded.
A comfortable win over Arsenal coupled with West Ham United's defeat to Wolves has moved Liverpool back into 3rd place in the Premier League table. They are 4 points behind Chelsea at the top of the Division, but Liverpool play first this weekend and can close that gap for twenty-four hours at least. The Reds have a 3-3-0 record at Anfield in the Premier League where Liverpool have scored 14 goals and conceded 5.
Liverpool saw a long unbeaten run ended in a 3-2 defeat at the London Stadium before the November international break, but they have bounced back with six goals and a couple of wins over Arsenal and Porto. They have scored at least twice in 7 straight games at Anfield in all competitions and Liverpool have won 3 in a row here.
Joe Gomez, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Roberto Firmino are expected to miss out. Diogo Jota picked up a knock last Saturday, but he has been training and should be available for selection, while Andrew Robertson also made a substitute appearance on Wednesday after missing the Arsenal game.
Southampton
A couple of consecutive 1-0 wins had given Southampton momentum and they scored first at Carrow Road last weekend too, but Ralph Hasenhuttl was frustrated by his side's inability to put their hosts to the sword in the first half. That was magnified by the fact that Southampton were beaten and the manager will be looking for much better in the final third to ensure his team are not dragged back into the relegation fight.
The Saints are 13th in the Premier League table and 13 points returned is a pretty good start to the campaign and keeps the team 5 clear of the relegation zone. They have a 1-2-3 record away from home and Southampton have scored 6 goals and conceded 10 in those fixtures.
Southampton had been unbeaten in 5 games in normal time in all competitions and they had won 3 of 4 Premier League games before the defeat at Norwich City. All of those Premier League wins have come by the same 1-0 scoreline. Southampton have only won 1 of their last 11 away Premier League games, although they had been beaten in just 1 of 4 away fixtures before the trip to Carrow Road.
Jack Stephens and Stuart Armstrong are doubts for this fixture.
Head to Head
Both Southampton and Liverpool beat the other at home last season.
Liverpool have won 4 in a row at Anfield against this opponent.
Prediction
Momentum is behind Liverpool after their 3-2 defeat at West Ham United and they have won back to back games at Anfield. They will be looking to keep the pressure on Manchester City and Chelsea by winning this one too and making sure the fans are in positive mood before the first Merseyside derby of the season which is coming up on Wednesday evening.
Jurgen Klopp made some changes to his starting eleven in the win over Porto during the week, but the 2-0 scoreline means Liverpool have scored two or more goals in 7 straight games at Anfield in all competitions. Some of their key players were given a chance to rest and Liverpool have had a very good home record against Southampton.
They should be able to build on that even if Southampton are having a decent season- the problem for The Saints is that they do not score enough goals and it will be difficult to contain Liverpool in their current form in front of goal.
Ralph Hasenhuttl will be encouraged by the goalless draw Southampton earned at the Etihad Stadium in September, but they have been well beaten at Chelsea since then. Southampton have to make sure they try and stay in this game as long as possible and see if they can frustrate their hosts into mistakes, but I do think this is a game that is largely going to be dominated by Liverpool.
With the amount of goals being scored by Liverpool, it is hard to imagine this fixture ending in anything but another comfortable home win. Their last 4 home victories over Southampton have come by at least a two goal margin and I think that will be the case on Saturday too before the big games at Everton and Wolves coming up.
Southampton's underlying defensive numbers have been pretty impressive in recent weeks, but they have not really run into a team as strong as Liverpool have been in the final third. I expect that attacking threat to lead the home team to a relatively comfortable win on Saturday as they shift the pressure to Manchester City and Chelsea who will both play on Sunday afternoon.
