Everton
The taunts from the Liverpool fans would only have rubbed salt into the wounds for the Everton fans that did decide to stick it out in the 1-4 defeat to their big rivals on Wednesday. Rafael Benitez has to be feeling the pressure and he is going to need some big results really soon if the fans are not going to be in a position to force the board to make a big decision.
It has been an underwhelming four months for Everton who are 14th in the Premier League table and beginning to worry about the teams behind them rather than those in the European spots. The Toffees have the chance to bounce back at home this Monday, but Everton are only 3-1-3 at Goodison Park in the Premier League this season.
Everton are in an awful run of form and have not won any of their last 8 games in all competitions, while they have been beaten in 6 of their last 7 heading into this weekend. The home form has been letting them down in recent weeks and Everton have not won any of 4 here since their 2-0 victory over Arsenal. Everton have lost 3 of their last 4 games at home and they have conceded five to Watford and four to Liverpool within that run.
Yerry Mina, Mason Holgate and Andre Gomes are hoping to be available for selection. Salomon Rondon picked up an injury in the defeat to Liverpool and looks set to miss out, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin is not being rushed back and may not be available until Boxing Day.
Arsenal
Some Arsenal fans feel they are taking one step forward and two steps backwards under Mikel Arteta, but I honestly don't understand that thinking when you look at where the club are. If results go their way this weekend, Arsenal could be ready to move into the top four of the Premier League and Arteta is getting more out of this squad than most would have predicted back in August.
A 3-2 defeat to Manchester United would have hurt, but Arsenal are still 5th in the Premier League table and just a point behind West Ham United in the top four, although the table may look a lot different by the time this game kicks off. The Gunners have a 2-1-4 record away from home in the Premier League where they have scored 5 goals and conceded 14.
Arsenal have won 5 of their last 7 games in all competitions, but they have been beaten in 2 of their 3 Premier League games played since the November international break. They have won 1 of their last 4 away games in the Premier League and Arsenal have lost back to back fixtures on their travels at Liverpool and Manchester United.
There are no new injury concerns out of the defeat at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
Head to Head
Everton did the Premier League double over Arsenal last season.
Everton are also unbeaten in 3 at home against Arsenal and they have won 2 of those games.
Prediction
Monday Night Football is headed up by two clubs that are not playing in European Football this season and who have had big ambitions that have not been met in recent years.
At least Arsenal look to be on the right road as Mikel Arteta brings his team to a ground that he is very familiar with as a former Everton player. Arsenal have lost back to back games at Anfield and Old Trafford, but this is a team that is only a point outside of the top four in the Premier League and that is largely because Arsenal have made hay against those opponents they have been expected to beat.
It is the case on Monday as they are favourites to beat Everton, despite this game being played at Goodison Park.
That says plenty about Everton who have been struggling for consistency and who were embarrassed by Liverpool in their last home game. Rafael Benitez is under pressure to find a big result in charge of a team that have lost 6 of their last 7 games in the Premier League, but the Spaniard has to be worried about how little an impact he has had on results in recent weeks.
The manager is one that many will consider a defensive one, and his teams are not expected to concede a lot of goals. However, Everton have conceded five goals against Watford and four against Liverpool in recent home games and they do not have the attacking firepower to make up for that.
Key players are beginning to return for Everton, which is vital for them, but they are still vulnerable at the back and a youthful Arsenal team will feel they can expose any problems the home team are having. In saying that, I do think Everton will create chances too and I think this game is one that may feature at least three goals on the night.
An early goal will really spark things, while the underlying numbers of recent Premier League games involving Everton and Arsenal suggest there will be chances in this one. You would have to worry for Everton if they concede early with the fans looking to turn on their team, but this is a game that could see the attacking players come out on top regardless of which of the two teams score first.
Games at Goodison Park between Everton and Arsenal have been mixed in recent seasons in terms of goals being scored, but this has the makings of an entertaining one for the neutrals, although less so for the fans.
