The Brazilian top flight season has recently got underway and both Flamengo and Botafogo have made promising starts to the new campaign with Flamengo having won two of their opening three games, lifting them into an early 2nd place position in the Serie A table.
Victories against Atletico GO 2-1 and Sao Paulo 2-1 along with a point in a 0-0 draw away at Palmeiras have given the hosts a solid start to the season, while the bigger picture also looks encouraging from Flamengo’s point of view as well.
Flamengo have lost just twice in their last 11 matches overall in the Brazilian top flight whilst also collecting seven wins in the process including wins on home soil against Palmeiras, Bragantino, Cuiaba and the aforementioned Sao Paulo.
Botafogo have produced a similar start to this season as that of their hosts as the visitors have also collected two wins within their opening three games of this new domestic top flight season thanks to wins against Atletico GO and Juventude in 1-0 and 5-1 victories respectively.
However, Botafogo began the season in losing fashion as the visitors were dealt a 3-2 defeat on the road at Cruzeiro and it’s also worth mentioning that both of Botafogo’s recent wins were achieved on home soil at their Estádio Nilton Santos.
The bigger picture shows Botafogo have managed just these two wins though from their previous 14 matches overall which includes slipping to six defeats within this period including defeats on the road at Vasco da Gama, Internacional and Cruzeiro respectively, so this upcoming trip to Maracanã could be a tricky one for Artur Jorge’s side especially as Botafogo have won just twice in their last 13 away games.
