Two early goals set the Netherlands on their way as they look to push towards North America and the World Cup Finals that begin in twelve months time. It was a dominant display in Helsinki and Netherlands will take further encouragement about their chances of topping this World Cup Qualifying Group after hearing of some of the disfunction in the Poland camp.
There are still 3 points between Netherlands and Poland in this Group, but the Dutch have a game in hand and it is the head to head with their main rivals in this section that will determine the final standings. They will conclude the current campaign with a home tie on Match Day 4 and Netherlands can then have a bit of a rest before coming back together for the home Qualifier against Poland in early September.
Netherlands were beaten on Penalties in the Nations League Quarter Final, but the performances in both Legs against Spain will offer encouragement for the Euro 2024 Semi Finalists. It was imperative they got off to a winning start in this World Cup Qualifying Group and Netherlands have beaten both Bosnia-Herzegovina and Hungary impressively at home in their Nations League campaign over the last nine months.
Malta
They not only play in League D of the Nations League, but Malta finished behind Moldova in that Group and that means ambitions are limited to merely finishing 4th in this World Cup Qualifying section. Like many other nations of a similar quality, Malta have proven to be a little tougher to beat these days and they have shown some spirit in the early World Cup Qualifiers, even with limited rewards.
The side have yet to score in three Qualifiers played, but Malta have only suffered narrow losses to Finland and Poland and were able to hold Lithuania to a goalless draw on Match Day 3. In the last Euro Qualifying Group, Malta conceded 20 goals in the 8 losses suffered and were only beaten 2-0 when visiting England.
Malta had been unbeaten in 4 games before the World Cup Qualifiers began in March, but those were against League D teams from the Nations League and the step up to this level is a significant test. Unsurprisingly, there are some heavy losses littered in with some of their recent results, but Malta have been able to show plenty of fight too.
Head to Head
Thirty years have passed since Netherlands and Malta have faced one another- the last time was in the Euro 1996 Qualifying Group and Netherlands won both games 4-0.
Prediction
We have seen some teams struggling at the end of a long season and that has led to some mixed performances on Match Day 3 of the UEFA World Cup Qualifiers.
However, there have been some stronger efforts put out there and Netherlands were very impressive in their win in Helsinki.
A similar level would be too much for Malta, although the latter have to be respected for putting some battling displays on the board already. They were only beaten 2-0 in Poland and that was the same result when visiting England in the last European Championship Qualifiers, although Italy were much more comfortable 4-0 winners.
That score looks most likely when considering how well Netherlands have played in the Nations League home games and the amount of goals this team have been scoring. Both Hungary and Bosnia-Herzegovina shipped at least four goals to Netherlands and the home team can match that mark again, which should be good enough to cover the Asian Handicap line.
