Japan
With extra places offered to the AFC Confederation at the expanded World Cup in 2026, it is not going to surprise anyone that Japan have booked their place in North America. When they arrive next summer, Japan will be playing at an eighth consecutive World Cup Finals and they round out their Qualifying campaign on Tuesday.
Earning a place in the next World Cup is impressive, but doing so by dominating a Qualifying Group that contained the likes of Australia and Saudi Arabia will impress even more. They were beaten a few days ago in Perth, but that is the first loss suffered by Japan in this Group and they were the first Asian nation to secure a spot in North America alongside the three hosts.
Japan were, in fact, the first team outside of the hosts who earned a place at the World Cup Finals, but they have failed to win, or score, in their last 2 Qualifiers against Saudi Arabia and Australia. The goalless draw with Saudi Arabia was in a game hosted by Japan, and that does mean the home team have won 1 of their last 3 Qualifiers here.
Indonesia
An expanded World Cup format is supposed to help nations reach the Finals for the first time, and that is the way FIFA have been backed to secure a forty-eight team tournament. The proof is in the pudding with some new names coming out of the AFC Confederation, but Indonesia are going to be pushing to play at the World Cup Finals for the first time since 1938.
Back then they were known as the Dutch East Indies and they were crushed 6-0 by Hungary in the opening Round in France, but Indonesia have not really gotten that close to returning in recent times. They have done enough in this Qualifying Round to avoid elimination, but Indonesia are going to have to take part in a three team Group later this year and only one team will be able to guarantee a spot at the next World Cup Finals.
Indonesia made a really slow start to this Qualifying Group and they were struggling to finish in the top four of the six team section. However, the side have won consecutive Qualifiers at home against Bahrain and China and that has been enough to likely finish up behind the big three in the Group- Japan, Australia and Saudi Arabia.
Head to Head
Japan visited Jakarta in November 2024 and they crushed Indonesia 0-4.
Earlier in 2024 at the Asian Cup in Qatar, Japan were 3-1 winners against this opponent.
Prediction
Both of these teams have achieved what they would have wanted from this Qualifying Group and they will conclude the fixtures on Tuesday.
For Japan the next year will be about building towards the World Cup, but for Indonesia there will be a big draw coming up where they will be placed in a three team Group and have another shot at playing at the Finals as Indonesia rather than Dutch East Indies.
That occurred back in 1938 and it has been a long wait for Indonesia.
They have found the top teams in this Group a little too hot to handle and the draw will need to be kind for Indonesia to snap that long wait to return to the big stage. A fixture like this one does offer them a chance to work on a few things that they may need later in the year, but it will be tough to contain Japan.
A couple of upset results have been earned against Saudi Arabia, but Indonesia were well beaten when hosting Japan and Australia beat them 5-1 in Sydney. It is unlikely that Japan reach that same margin, but they can round out the Qualifying campaign by ending a poor mini-run by securing a victory by at least two goals.
