If you enjoy watching high-scoring football matches, the opening fixtures in the Under 21 European Championships have really been right up your street.
Eight matches have been played and six have finished with at least three goals shared out, although one of those that haven't featured France U21. That was not for a lack of trying with the French and Portugal U21 having their chances, but the fear was that both would settle for a point if that was the trend of the opening Group game and that is what both earned.
It does mean there is a little bit of pressure on the two favourites in this Group C, but perhaps more so on France who will be facing Georgia U21 in their second Group match.
A clinical display from Georgia saw them come away with a 2-1 win over Poland U21 and this current group of players now have every chance of matching the achievements of two years ago and that is reaching the Knock Out phase. They were considered underdogs to do that in the tournament they were co-hosting and so Georgia doing the same again in 2025 would arguably be a bigger surprise.
As the only team with three points on the board, the challenge for Georgia is the best approach to take to this fixture.
Ultimately a point would not be a bad result with one fixture to play, especially if Portugal are to win on the same night. It may lead to a situation where another point could suit both parties, but that is someway down the line and instead Georgia may feel the only real control they have on their destiny is by winning this game.
They are the underdog in this Group game against a France team that had been in decent form ahead of the Under 21 European Championship Finals kicking off and the draw with Portugal should not have dented too much confidence. This is a team that had scored a fair few goals in three recent friendly matches and they will be encouraged by the successes Poland were having against this Georgia defence.
France have won the three previous games against Georgia at this level and the feeling is that they can get back on track with a victory that could be enough to earn passage through to the Quarter Final. It would certainly put France back in control of their own fate with a single game to play in the section and the goal-scoring power of this French team should be able to shine in this second fixture.
The opening goal does feel important with younger players perhaps feeling the mental strain more than experienced players may do- France would feel under significant pressure if they were to fall behind, but an opening goal for the favourites could see them follow the likes of England U21 and Germany U21 to a pretty comfortable victory.
Prediction
Goals have been flowing in this tournament and the suggestion is that France are ready to join the party after the point earned against Portugal.
Nothing will come easy in this fixture, but Georgia's defensive numbers in the opening win against Poland have to be a concern.
A clinical attack helped them to three important points, but Georgia may not be able to contain France for long enough to get into those positions again.
