There are some similarities from the 2023 Under 21 European Championship Finals and Czechia U21 will be hoping that history repeats itself in 2025.
Two years ago they were pretty well beaten in the opening Group match against England U21 and the same happened in this section with Czechia going down 1-3. They did not play badly in the fixture, but England were clinical going forward and the added quality of the defending Champion just shone through the key moments.
Going back to Georgia in June 2023, Czechia bounced back in the second Group game by upsetting Germany U21 and they will be taking aim at doing the same here in Slovakia.
There are some differences- that Germany team of two years ago severely underachieved and were eliminated as the bottom team in the section with the only point earned in the opening fixture against Israel U21. This time Czechia are going to be dealing with a German team that produced one of the stronger displays in the opening Group matches when thumping Slovenia U21 3-0 and even a point would put Germany in a very strong position in the Group before the final round of fixtures.
It feels like Germany are a very strong team in this tournament and they have been scoring goals for fun in the preparation for the Finals in Slovakia. That power was on display in the opening fixture in this Group and all of the pressure is on Czechia to find a performance.
Even if they were not involved, there will be plenty of motivation inside the Germany camp to make up for the shock defeat to Czechia two years ago and that cannot be ignored.
Respect has to be given to Czechia for the overall performance against England in the opening game, but this is another significant test and one that be beyond them.
Prediction
Goals have been flowing in Slovakia in June and Germany can keep that going in this second Group fixture against Czechia.
The pressure is on Czechia to respond to their opening loss, but Germany will be motivated to secure their place in the Quarter Final before the final fixture against England.
Topping the Group may still be an ambition too, especially after Netherlands were upset in their opening Group game by dropping points against Finland.
It is something to consider, but Germany will want to produce a big performance regardless and they can win this one by a couple of goals to remind everyone why they are considered such a threat to win the trophy here later this month.
