The final round of fixtures in the South American section of the World Cup qualifiers will unfold this week and as Peru occupy second from bottom in the CONMEBOL table ahead of this final fixture against Paraguay and six points shy of 7th placed Venezuela, Oscar Ibanez’s side are now playing for pride.
A very disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign has yielded just two wins in 17 group matches for Peru who have also been involved in six draws along with being handed nine defeats as well - only Bolivia (10) and Chile (11) have lost more to date.
Although they registered a 3-1 home win against Bolivia back in March, subsequent results have once again reverted back to ordinary mode as Peru have been held to draws with Ecuador and Colombia along with losses incurred against Venezuela and Uruguay.
Paraguay are already assured of a place in next year’s World Cup finals as the visitors sit in 6th place and an unassailable seven points ahead of 7th placed Venezuela, and having slipped to just one defeat in their last 11 qualifiers, Gustavo Alfaro’s side look well placed to further add to their points tally at the Estadio Nacional de Lima.
Recent victories gained over Venezuela, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay have contributed to Paraguay’s resurgence in the CONMEBOL region but they have yet to record an away win so far in this qualifying campaign.
An away record of 0-5-3 4/7 however, looks set to improve when they travel to Lima to take on lowly Peru.
