Paris Saint-Germain
Not many would have been tipping up Paris Saint-Germain to end their long wait to finally pick up the Champions League trophy as they were struggling through the League Phase. In fact there were doubts that Paris Saint-Germain would even make the top twenty-four back in January, but something clicked for Luis Enrique's men.
After finding a way through to the Play Off Round of the Knock Out Stages, Paris Saint-Germain impressed throughout the run to the Final in Munich before thumping Inter 5-0. They have followed up by reaching the Final of the Club World Cup, but Paris Saint-Germain came up a little short, although that has not stopped the French club from being tipped up as one of the favourites to win the Champions League again.
Paris Saint-Germain have only lost 1 of their last 10 games in all competitions and they have won 8 of those fixtures, including the last 4 in succession. The side have won both home fixtures played this season and that makes it 5 straight victories for Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes.
Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele are set to miss out.
Atalanta
Recent years have seen Atalanta put themselves right amongst the very best teams in Italian Football and two seasons ago they won the Europa League. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini has decided to leave Atalanta and it was something of a surprise to see Ivan Juric handed the top job considering his time with Roma and Southampton previously.
There has been some upheaval behind the scenes, notably with the fallout between Ademola Lookman and the club. He scored 20 goals last season in all competitions, but Lookman wanted to leave the club in the summer and Ivan Juric has made it clear that he will not consider the player until he is fully committed to Atalanta.
Atalanta were beaten by Club Brugge in the Play Off Round of the Knock Out Rounds in the Champions League last season, which was a disappointment considering they finished 9th in the League Phase and the Belgians 24th. They have opened the season unbeaten in 3 games, although Atalanta drew the first couple of those before thumping Lecce at home this past weekend.
Ederson and Gianluca Scamacca are expected to miss out for the Italian team.
Head to Head
These two clubs met in the Champions League Semi Final in the 2019/20 season which was played as a single Leg tie as the world moved through the Covid pandemic.
Atalanta had been leading going into injury time, but Paris Saint-Germain scored twice before eventually losing to Bayern Munich in the Final.
Prediction
Early injuries have just made things a little tougher for Paris Saint-Germain, but they have still managed to win League games.
However, the Champions League is another kind of test as Luis Enrique's team found out early in the League Phase last season.
This time the manager will be keen for Paris Saint-Germain to not have the same kind of stresses to progress as they did back in January and they can make a strong start to the competition.
Early performances have just seen Paris Saint-Germain struggle defensively, but they have continued to produce potent football in the final third.
They are hosting an Atalanta team in something of a transition with Ivan Juric the surprising choice to take over as manager. Some of the early results have been disappointing, but Atalanta are still a dangerous team and they were unbeaten in 4 away games in the Champions League Group Stage last season.
It is a run that includes a 2-2 draw at Barcelona, but Atalanta were beaten in both Legs of the Knock Out Round against Club Brugge and they may come out on the wrong side of an entertaining opener on Wednesday.
