Manchester United
You would have to be an incredibly pessimistic kind of fan to not have enjoyed Manchester United's win over Liverpool at Anfield, the first for nearly a decade. While the fans will have been able to enjoy that win, Ruben Amorim and the squad are well aware that they will be judged on how they can back that up having won consecutive Premier League games for the first time since the end of the 2023/24 season.
The three points has pushed Manchester United back up into 9th place in the Premier League table and they do have an opportunity to close in on a number of teams above them who have been scheduled to play later in the weekend. Last season the form at Old Trafford was really poor, but Manchester United have a 3-0-1 record here and have scored 7 goals and conceded 4 in those matches.
Manchester United have won 4 of their last 6 games in the Premier League since being beaten in the League Cup Second Round at Grimsby Town on Penalties. They last won 3 Premier League games in succession in February 2024, but Manchester United can take aim at that by also winning for a fourth consecutive Premier League game at Old Trafford.
Lisandro Martinez has been a long-term injury and will not be rushed back too quickly. The likes of Leny Yoro and Benjamin Sesko will be pushing for a return to the starting eleven.
Brighton
Danny Welbeck scored a brace last weekend and the second came late in the day to earn Brighton a 2-1 win over Newcastle United. It was a competitive fixture and one that could easily have ended up the other way, but Fabian Hurzeler will be looking for his team to maintain the current momentum and should be taking a confident group of players to the North West.
The Seagulls are now back up into 10th place in the Premier League table with 12 points secured and they are on track to challenge for European places at the end of the season, which has been the target set. The side have a 1-1-2 away record where Brighton have scored 5 goals and conceded 6.
Brighton were beaten 2-1 at Bournemouth out of the September international break, but they are unbeaten in 5 games in all competitions since then and have won 3 times. Late goals have been a feature of a lot of Brighton games this season and that was the case in winning 1-3 at Chelsea and also securing a 1-1 draw at Wolves in the last 2 Premier League games played on their travels.
Joel Veltman, Diego Gomez, Bojan Gruda and Kaoru Mitoma are all hoping to be available to travel for this late Saturday kick off.
Head to Head
Brighton did the Premier League double over Manchester United last season.
For the second consecutive season, Brighton were able to leave Old Trafford with a 1-3 win.
Manchester United had won 8 straight home games against Brighton in all competitions, but have lost the last 3 at Old Trafford against this opponent.
Prediction
This really feels like a massive test for Ruben Amorim and his Manchester United team.
All credit has to be given to the manager and players for the effort they put into the 1-2 win at Anfield last Sunday and all of the fans will have been enjoying that victory over the past few days.
However, all of that momentum and positivity will be erased if Manchester United are not able to beat Brighton this Saturday and secure a third Premier League win in a row for the first time since February 2024.
This is not going to be an easy game by any stretch of the imagination and especially not when you factor in Brighton's run of 3 straight wins at Old Trafford. Fabian Hurzeler's men are also unbeaten in 5 games in all competitions and the win over Newcastle United means they have had 3 wins in 4 games.
One of those is the 1-3 win at Chelsea, but this is a Brighton team that have been struggling defensively. Even that win at Stamford Bridge came about thanks to the home team being reduced to ten men while leading 1-0 and Brighton were moments away from suffering a loss at Wolves in the last away Premier League game played.
Teams have been able to create chances against Brighton and Manchester United's new look forward line have settled in.
Manchester United should be able to create chances and the new goalkeeper has shown enough in the opening two games played to give his defensive colleagues a boost in belief and confidence. That is so important and so the home team look capable of keeping the positive results coming ahead of two tough away League games before the November international break.
This is a Brighton team that will carry a threat when they get forward.
There is pace and quality in the final third, but Manchester United's Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko front three have shown they can put the finishing touches to the football being played.
Last season playing at Old Trafford became something of a chore, but Manchester United have won 3 games in a row here and have scored at least twice in each of those. If they can reach that tally again, Manchester United can do enough to secure another three points and really put some momentum into their season.
