Slavia Prague
They are Czechia Champions, but the step up to the Champions League level is always going to be filled with challenges and ambitions for Slavia Prague are not going to be as high as the elite Clubs competing in the competition. Instead merely earning a top twenty-four finish and a place in the Knock Out Rounds in February has to be seen as a big achievement and Slavia Prague have already found out how tough it will be to do that.
The side have picked up 2 points in the Champions League from the first three fixtures played, but that leaves Slavia Prague in 28th place in the League table. This is the second home game they will be playing in the competition and there will be some regret that they did not earn maximum points when hosting Bodo/Glimt and leading 2-0 with less than 15 minutes left to play. Last time out Slavia Prague did earn a battling goalless draw in Atalanta, which will offer some encouragement.
Slavia Prague are unbeaten in 6 games in all competitions since losing 3-0 at Inter Milan on Match Day 2 of the Champions League, although they had drawn 4 in a row before consecutive victories. This is a team that are not only unbeaten in 12 home games in all competitions, but Slavia Prague have won 9 of those fixtures.
The home team are dealing with a host of injuries ahead of this latest Champions League fixture.
Arsenal
During the heyday of George Graham at the helm, Arsenal fans would rejoice singing '1-0 to the Arsenal' knowing that the team were likely to keep a clean sheet in a winning effort. Once again the squad has been built on strong defensive foundations, but Mikel Arteta's team are much more likely to win 2-0 thanks to the squad depth that has made up for a number of attacking players being sidelined.
Even the manager cannot shy away from being labelled as favourites in England, but the supporters may also feel this Arsenal squad is capable of having a real go at winning the Champions League for the first time. Last season they reached the Semi Final, and Arsenal go into Match Day 4 of the new League Phase of the competition as one of five clubs with a perfect record as they chase another top eight finish.
Arsenal won for the ninth time in a row on Saturday as they secured another 0-2 win, this time at Turf Moor, and there will be plenty of confidence to take into this European test. The Gunners have won their last 5 away games in all competitions and conceded a single goal in that run.
Both Martin Zubimendi and Victor Gyokeres picked up knocks against Burnley- the former cannot travel as he has a European suspension to serve anyway and the latter is unlikely to be risked. A number of players are edging closer to a return to action, but not on Tuesday, and Mikel Arteta is set to rotate some of the starting eleven again.
Head to Head
This is the fifth time Slavia Prague and Arsenal are facing in a competitive fixture.
The two previous games hosted by Slavia Prague have ended goalless in 2007 and in a 0-4 win for Arsenal in the Europa League in 2021.
Prediction
The last two months could not have gone much better for Arsenal as they have continued to churn out positive results while rivals have stumbled.
Mikel Arteta has admitted that his team should be thinking about going on to win the Premier League, but he is also demanding focus and the players are responding as he would like.
Fans are also going to be very excited about Arsenal's prospects in the Champions League and this defence will give them a chance. They can only improve when some of the attacking players return from injury, but Arsenal are still showing enough in the final third and they are scoring enough goals to make things relatively comfortable within matches.
Next up is a trip to the capital of Czechia to take on the Champions Slavia Prague, but it does feel a good time to be facing an injury hit host.
The battling draw in Bergamo deserves respect, but Slavia Prague had to ride their luck in that game and were well beaten in Milan by Champions League Runners Up Inter.
Being at home will make Slavia Prague naturally more dangerous, but the onus is also on them to be a little more positive and this should play into the Arsenal hands.
Even with the expected changes, the English Premier League club should have too much for this opponent and Arsenal can make it four wins from four in the Champions League and likely by another margin of at least two goals.
