Tottenham Hotspur
If you had said to a Tottenham Hotspur fan in August that the team would be 5th in the Premier League table and 15th in the Champions League table moving into early November, most would have accepted that, especially after the 2024/25 season. However, it feels like something has not quite clicked together and hearing the fans boo the team off the field on Saturday after a home defeat will have stung Thomas Frank.
The new manager has only had his feet under the table for three months and might have expected some of the early results to have given him some credit in the bank, but Tottenham Hotspur fans want to see more. Thomas Frank might be more concerned with the reaction of a couple of his key players at the end of the defeat to Chelsea and he will want to see a big reaction from the squad as Spurs look to improve on the 5 points secured in the Champions League through three matches played.
Tottenham Hotspur have won 1 of the last 5 games played in all competitions since the October international break and they have lost consecutive fixtures without conceding a goal. Home form has been particularly disappointing and Tottenham Hotspur have failed to win any of 3 games played here since the win over Doncaster Rovers in the League Cup, while suffering consecutive League losses.
Lucas Bergvall suffered a head injury on Saturday and he is expected to return after the November internationals. The home squad is still ravaged by injury, although Thomas Frank believes they will look much healthier towards the end of the month. Both Micky van de Ven and Djed Spence were criticised for the actions at the end of the defeat to Chelsea and may be dropped.
Copenhagen
Inconsistent recent form has Copenhagen trailing domestically and it will have felt like a big challenge for this club to even reach the Knock Out Rounds in the Champions League. They can only do that by finishing in the top twenty-four, but Copenhagen may have overachieved by coming through three Qualifying ties to take their place amongst the elite of European Football.
Early results in the League Phase of the competition has perhaps underlined the challenges that face Copenhagen and they have just a single point from the first nine available. This means the Danish Champions are 32nd in the thirty-six team standing and the sole away game played in this Group saw Copenhagen beaten 2-0 at Qarabag.
Copenhagen had not only failed to win any of 5 games played in all competitions, but they had lost 3 of those and so consecutive wins ahead of this Match Day 4 fixture will have been appreciated. The side had lost 2 away games in a row, but snapped that run by beating Hobro in the Cup, a team from the second tier of Danish Football.
A number of players were already expected to miss out and Marcos Lopez could be added to the list.
Head to Head
This is the first competitive meeting between Tottenham Hotspur and Copenhagen.
Prediction
It is perhaps a little surprising to hear unrest from the Tottenham Hotspur stands just three months into Thomas Frank's tenure as manager.
As has been stated on these pages for English Premier League previews, Tottenham Hotspur have really been struggling for consistency in the final third. They have scored goals, which is not a surprise considering some of the quality they have within the squad, but consistent chance creation has been lacking and Tottenham Hotspur have been very reliant on set pieces.
Saturday was the low point and Frank admitted he has never managed a team that created as little as Tottenham Hotspur did in the 0-1 defeat to Chelsea. Only poor finishing from Chelsea prevented that scoreline being much wider in their own favour and so this is a challenging fixture for the manager and the players.
Seeing Micky van de Ven and Djed Spence openly ignoring Thomas Frank at the end of the defeat to Chelsea has to be a concern and this is going to be another tense night in the office.
Tottenham Hotspur are rightly set as favourites- a top English Premier League club will always be favoured over a Scandinavian Champion at home.
However, Spurs cannot afford to overlook any opponent right now and Copenhagen will believe they have 'nothing to lose'.
Recent form has not been the most encouraging though and Copenhagen are missing some key players ahead of this game. They have challenged Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund in this Champions League Group, but Copenhagen picked up a single point and both of those fixtures were at home.
The one away game was played in Qarabag and Copenhagen were well beaten in that one, which will have stung.
They had lost consecutive away games in all competitions before beating a lower League opponent in the Danish Cup and so it is hard to believe Copenhagen can do enough to earn a positive result here.
However, they can certainly look to make things difficult for Tottenham Hotspur and this feels like a game that will perhaps be a little hard to watch for the neutral.
Ultimately you have to believe Tottenham Hotspur's extra quality should prevail, but they were narrow winners over Villarreal on Match Day 1 in the first game hosted in the Champions League. This is another where Thomas Frank will be looking for the defence to hold up, as it has for the majority of the season, and then look for someone to make a difference in the final third and it may result in another Tottenham Hotspur home win with a clean sheet.
Spurs have won 3 home games out of 7 played here this season, but all have been when earning a clean sheet and doing that again looks a big, appealing price.
