Arsenal

Fans will have turned their attention to the injury picked up by defensive leader Gabriel on international duty and be hoping that the Brazilian is not going to be missing for significant time. Manager Mikel Arteta will also be holding his breath, but his own thoughts will quickly have turned to the North London derby and helping his squad pick themselves up from dropping two points before the November international break.

The Gunners are still top of the Premier League table, but the lead to Manchester City has been closed to 4 points and the latter also play on Saturday with a chance to begin to breath down the Arsenal necks. All the manager, the staff, the players and the fans can do is focus on beating an old rival and improving the 4-1-0 record at the Emirates Stadium in what is a big week coming up.

Arsenal had won 10 games in a row in all competitions and barely conceded any goals in that run, but they were held to a 2-2 draw by Sunderland two weeks ago. That was a game played in the North East, but this one is played in their own home in North London where Arsenal have won 5 in a row in all competitions since the 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

Gabriel looks set for a spell on the sidelines, although the manager will make it clear as to how long that is expected to be rather than the reports that have been coming out suggesting between one or two months. Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz are set to miss out, but Noni Madueke, Gabriel Martinelli and Viktor Gyokeres could be involved.

Tottenham Hotspur

There has been clear discontent voiced by the Tottenham Hotspur fans after recent performances, but Thomas Frank will not allow that to distract him from the task at hand. He will be disappointed by the late goal conceded to Manchester United two weeks ago in a 2-2 home draw after Tottenham Hotspur had scored a couple of late goals to take the lead, and the manager will want to see a positive reaction as he takes charge in the North London derby for the first time.

Considering we have heard some boos at the end of recent Tottenham Hotspur games, it may be a surprise to note that the team are 5th in the Premier League table. They will also take real confidence from the fact that Spurs have the best away record in the Premier League at 4-1-0 where they have scored 12 goals and conceded 3.

Tottenham Hotspur have won 1 of their last 4 games in all competitions and suffered a couple of defeats in that time against Chelsea and Newcastle United. The latter was an away defeat in the League Cup Fourth Round, but Tottenham Hotspur had been unbeaten in all 7 fixtures played on their travels under Thomas Frank before that loss. However, Spurs have now won 2 of the last 6 away games played in all competitions, although both have been in the last 2 away League games at Leeds United and Everton.

A host of players have been on the sidelines with injury, which has not helped the new manager, but the likes of Cristian Romero, Lucas Bergvall, Yves Bissouma, Ben Davies and Mohammed Kudus are expected to be available. Dominic Solanke could also be ready to make the short journey to this away fixture.

Head to Head

Arsenal did the Premier League double over Tottenham Hotspur last season and they are unbeaten in 6 North London derby games played, while winning 5 of those.

The Gunners are unbeaten in 6 home North London derbies and they have won 4 of those fixtures.

Prediction

We are likely going to hear a lot about injuries in the build up to the North London derby this weekend, but excuses are going to be in short supply for both managers.

Fans do not want to hear that and instead will be expecting Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur to do what is necessary to earn a positive result.

An injury to Gabriel feels like a blow for Arsenal as a key part of what has been a very impressive defence, but there is depth in the squad that should be able to plug the very big gap left behind. They are experienced in losing important players and keeping things turning over, while Arsenal are expected to have attacking reinforcements back this Sunday, which gives them a real edge.

Arsenal have been on an impressive run and even the 2-2 draw at Sunderland may eventually be seen as a positive result.

They have been very good at home where Arsenal have won 5 in a row in all competitions and the Premier League leaders are rightly favoured to get the better of Tottenham Hotspur again.

The Gunners are unbeaten in 6 North London derby games and have won 5 of those matches, but these fixtures are rarely going to be straight-forward.

It may be Thomas Frank's first experience of this derby, but the manager will know the importance of the fixture to the fans and he will likely use that as motivation for his injury hit squad. Like Arsenal, some reinforcements are expected to be available this weekend, while Tottenham Hotspur have been more effective away from home so far this season.

That may be partly down to the fact that Thomas Frank can focus on the defensive shape away from home where the onus is on the host to attack.

At home, Spurs are always going to be expected to come forward and the new manager has struggled with the balance needed in those fixtures, but here they can sit back and look to counter with the pace that is available in the forward areas. This does make Tottenham Hotspur dangerous, although there is a real feeling that the team have overachieved away from home and that they will regress to the mean.

Tottenham Hotspur played well enough at Everton, but they have been largely outplayed in matches at Bodo/Glimt, Leeds United and Monaco before that, but somehow escaped unbeaten. Brighton led 2-0 against Spurs at the Amex Stadium before another rally, but it is going to be much more difficult to fight back against Arsenal, even if Gabriel is absent.

Knowing that the defence may not be as watertight as usual should mean Arsenal get on the front foot and look to get on top of Spurs in this one.

The Gunners have shown enough firepower to believe they can score at least twice, especially with more options likely to be available from the bench, and that should be enough to win the game. You cannot rule Tottenham Hotspur out from playing a part and that makes the Asian Handicap a bit more difficult to read with derby games tended to be fought out until the bitter end.

Last season the game here finished 2-1, and Arsenal have now scored at least twice in each of the last 6 North London derby games they have hosted.

Mikel Arteta's team have scored twice in 6 of the 8 home games played in all competitions too and they can reach that mark in a win here.

The Pick :

Arsenal 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur
