Sunderland
The late goal conceded at Fulham will have been a blow for Regis Le Bris and his Sunderland squad after it looked liked they had done just enough to weather the storm. Despite that defeat, Sunderland are still going to be playing with plenty of confidence after the start made this season and the manager will just be looking for a positive reaction back in front of the passionate home supporters.
Results last weekend have seen Sunderland slip to 7th in the Premier League table, but they have 19 points on the board as we approach the busy festive period. Home form has been hugely important for Sunderland who have a 3-3-0 record at the Stadium of Light where they have scored 11 goals and conceded 5.
Sunderland came from behind to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge at the end of October, but they have not won any of the last 3 games played since then. Last time out at home, Sunderland fought back for a 2-2 draw with Arsenal, but that does mean 3 of the last 4 at the Stadium of Light have ended with the points shared out.
Aji Alese is closing in on a return to the squad, but may have to wait a few more days.
Bournemouth
It is a long season and teams like Bournemouth have to accept there will be some ups and downs in the performances, especially with the squad depth not as strong as some of the other clubs in the Division. This has perhaps been a factor in recent Premier League results, but everyone associated with the club will believe in the manager and the players and look for them to turn things back around.
The Cherries are 8th in the Premier League table after fighting back from 0-2 behind to earn a 2-2 draw with West Ham United last weekend and earning a spot in any of the UEFA competitions for next season remains the ambition. Improving the 1-2-3 away record will be key to achieve those Bournemouth aims.
Bournemouth have won 1 of the last 5 Premier League games, but the draw with West Ham United at least avoided the team losing for a third time in a row. They have not won any of the last 4 away League games and Bournemouth are bidding to avoid a third away defeat in a row having been beaten at Manchester City and Aston Villa previously.
Antoine Semenyo missed out last week, but is set to be available to travel. Justin Kluivert is hoping to return next weekend, but that would mean missing the next two Premier League games, while Ben Gannon-Doak has been ruled out until the New Year.
Head to Head
Sunderland and Bournemouth last met in the 2016/17 Premier League season and both fixtures were won by the away team.
This means Sunderland have only ever won 1 of 5 home games against Bournemouth and 3 of those have ended in draws.
Prediction
Both of these Premier League clubs have been given plenty of deserved praise this season, but they meet at the end of November in uncertain form.
Credit has to be given to Sunderland for keeping points ticking over until last weekend when they were narrowly beaten at Fulham. They conceded very late in that match, but return home where Sunderland are unbeaten in all Premier League games played this season.
However, it will not be lost on the manager that they have been held in 3 of the last 4 games at the Stadium of Light and Sunderland have had patches within those fixtures where they have been second best by a distance.
In saying that, Regis Le Bris has to be proud of the way his team have remained resilient, even when things have not been going perfectly, and that will always give Sunderland a chance.
They are hosting a Bournemouth team who had to fight back from 0-2 down last weekend to earn a 2-2 draw with West Ham United and avoid a third loss in a row. Now they are trying to snap a poor recent away Premier League run and having Antoine Semenyo back will be a huge help for The Cherries ahead of this long trip to the North East.
There is another Premier League round of games during the week, which can be a potential distraction and perhaps force managers to rotate the starting eleven.
It is another challenge for both managers and teams to overcome this weekend in what looks to be a tough fixture to call.
Sunderland hosting Bournemouth has ended in draws in 3 of the 5 previous times this fixture has been played and that looks a real runner this weekend.
Only Crystal Palace have played out more draws so far this season than both Sunderland and Bournemouth and the biggest price of the win-draw-win market looks like it will go close.
