Chelsea
Twelve months ago, Chelsea's young squad looked capable of mounting an unexpected Premier League title challenge, but they faltered in the festive period and earning the right to return to the Champions League became the focus. They are much more experienced now, and have picked up Conference League and Club World Cup silverware, while the 3-0 win over Barcelona in the Champions League will only have given the squad a huge boost of confidence.
Other clubs may be picking up the headlines, but Chelsea have quietly moved into 2nd place in the Premier League table and are 6 points behind leaders Arsenal. Closing that gap on Sunday will have many more believing this is a campaign in which Chelsea can push the League leaders for longer than they managed last season. The Blues have to focus as they look to improve the 3-1-2 Premier League record at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea were upset by Sunderland at the end of October, but have bounced back to put together a 6 game unbeaten run, during which time they have won 5 games. The defeat against Sunderland is also the only one suffered in 6 games at Stamford Bridge and Chelsea have won the other 5 of those too.
Romeo Lavia is out, but Cole Palmer could give the squad a boost by returning to the match day squad. Manager Enzo Maresca will not want to overburden his important attacking option and so Palmer may only be a substitute for this fixture.
Arsenal
Trophies are never handed out in November and that has to be the only downside to Arsenal's recent run of form that has made them favourites to win the Premier League and Champions League. The Gunners underlined that status in the premier UEFA competition by crushing Bayern Munich 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, but Mikel Arteta will be well aware that plenty of work has to be completed for Arsenal to be considered a success.
A thumping win over rivals Tottenham Hotspur will always be enjoyed by the fans, but the victory came on the same weekend that expected main title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City were both beaten. That means Arsenal are now 6 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, although they are visiting the nearest challengers this Sunday. The side have a 4-1-1 away record in the Premier League where Arsenal have scored 8 goals and conceded 4.
Arsenal's win over Bayern Munich has extended the unbeaten run to 16 games in all competitions and they have won 14 of those to really build some strong momentum. They had won 6 away games in a row in all competitions, but Arsenal saw that run ended in a 2-2 draw with Sunderland in their most recent away Premier League fixture.
Gabriel has been ruled out and both Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres are doubts. Martin Odegaard is back in contention, while Leandro Trossard is a doubt after being forced off in the win over Bayern Munich.
Head to Head
Arsenal took four points from rivals Chelsea in the Premier League last season.
Chelsea have not won any of the last 6 fixtures against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, although the last 2 have both ended in draws.
Prediction
The last game of the Premier League weekend is a big one between the top two, at least going into this round of fixtures.
The standings are expected to look a little different at kick off, especially for Chelsea, but Enzo Maresca's team are playing with some real confidence.
Having Cole Palmer back, even for limited minutes, will be a boost and Chelsea's thumping win over Barcelona shows that this young squad are capable against the very best when playing at top level.
Chelsea will need all of that if they are going to give the Champions-elect something to think about, while they will be encouraged by the last couple of home performances against Arsenal. Out of the two teams, it is Chelsea who have had less experience in the really big games in the last couple of years, but they are growing all of the time and the performance against Barcelona is hugely encouraging.
Of course they are facing a confident Arsenal team who are unbeaten in 16 games in all competitions and who have won 14 of those fixtures.
Mikel Arteta's team were very much the better team when hosting Bayern Munich, but this looks the toughest away test for Arsenal since losing at Liverpool back in August. They are defensively sound, but Chelsea will take encouragement by the continued absence of Gabriel and the fact Arsenal have not had a clean sheet in the last couple of fixtures without the Brazilian centre half.
This has all of the makings of a really good game and offers a chance for both teams to put a statement win on the board.
Having home advantage has been more important in the early months of the Premier League than has perhaps been the case in the last few seasons and Chelsea have that advantage.
Set pieces will be important and Chelsea have to show some strength, both mentally and physically, but they are improving and will be about as confident as can be hoped for this game.
The Blues should have enough about them to avoid defeat against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge for a third season in a row- it may not be enough to earn a first win over Arsenal in West London since August 2018, but Chelsea can be backed to avoid defeat, which could suit the League leaders anyway.
