Arsenal
Topping the Champions League Group does not necessarily mean having success in the competition next May (just ask Liverpool), but Mikel Arteta has to be very pleased with the way the squad managed another victory. Despite wholesale changes as injury and illness has spread through the squad, those coming in have given the Arsenal manager food for thought about future selections and that can only be a positive for the club.
The next step is bouncing back in the Premier League where the long unbeaten run was ended in a late 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, which also means Arsenal's lead at the top of the Division is down to 2 points over Manchester City. They do play before the two closest title rivals this weekend and The Gunners are back at home where they have a 6-1-0 record in the English top flight.
Arsenal had been moving through a slightly patchier run of form having won half of the previous 6 games in all competitions, but they crushed Club Brugge on Wednesday. The recent setbacks have been away from the Emirates Stadium and Arsenal have won 8 straight fixtures in front of the home fans since the 1-1 draw with Manchester City.
Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber did not travel in the Champions League game and both are hoping to be available. However, Riccardo Calafiori is suspended and William Saliba is set to miss out along with Gabriel, Christhian Mosquera and Leandro Trossard.
Wolves
A lot of people voiced criticism of Rob Edwards' decision to leave Middlesbrough to take over as manager of Wolves, and it looks like one that he could come to regret. Rob Edwards himself insisted this is the job he wanted the most when moving into football management, but Wolves are slumping towards the Championship and any potential ownership change may see sweeping changes made.
For now the manager has to try and keep the squad together and see if Wolves can find a way to rally- the latest loss on Monday evening leaves them rooted to the bottom of the table and 13 points from safety. In fact attention has turned to not avoiding the drop, but avoiding finishing with fewer than the 11 point record that Midlands rivals Derby County put up many years ago.
Wolves were level at half time against Manchester United, but they were beaten down in the second half and have now lost 9 straight games in all competitions. Any hope that a new manager would help the squad have a bounce back has long faded, and Wolves have lost 4 away Premier League games without scoring a goal.
Joao Gomes is available after a suspension.
Head to Head
Arsenal have completed the Premier League double over Wolves in each of the last 4 seasons.
They were beaten 1-2 by Wolves at the Emirates Stadium November 2020, but Arsenal have won 4 straight at home against them since then.
Prediction
Anything other than an Arsenal home win would be the shock of the season in the Premier League as a strong leader takes on the bottom club.
In most seasons you would still expect to see some fight out of those clubs at the bottom, but Wolves are tracking to be the worst ever Premier League performer and there is little sign of that being turned around.
45 points have been available to every top flight club this season and Wolves have picked up 2- they have lost 9 straight games in all competitions and this is a team that have been struggling in every aspect of their football.
The mistakes being made on Monday night in the home loss to Manchester United are extremely concerning and Wolves will do well to keep the scoreline respectable.
Credit has to be given to the club for at least being involved in competitive losses more often than not this season, while the 4 straight defeats at the Emirates Stadium have involved scores of 2-1 (twice) and 2-0.
However, there is also a 5-0 defeat amongst that and a well rested Arsenal team have plenty of depth to come in for this one to put up a strong attacking display in the last home Premier League game before Christmas.
Mikel Arteta will be looking for his team to bounce back from the late loss at Villa Park and Arsenal may want to be on the front foot to protect what will be a makeshift defence with potentially all four first choice defenders missing out.
That did not stop Arsenal from cruising to another big Champions League win and The Gunners may have the firepower to produce a big home win on Saturday evening.
