Football: English Premier League
Saturday 27th December 2025 - Kick Off 3pm
Liverpool
A tight game was changed with a sending off and Liverpool took advantage at Tottenham Hotspur, although the finish was tighter than it needed to be. Three points is what matters and Liverpool have an opportunity to build on those earned this month by beating two clubs that are fighting relegation when hosting both at Anfield over the next few days.
The Reds have moved back up to 5th in the Premier League table and they are only outside of the Champions League places on goal difference, although the expectation is that the top five will all be rewarded with a place in the top UEFA competition at the end of this campaign. A 5-1-2 record at Anfield certainly feels like it has room for improvement through the second half of this campaign.
Liverpool are unbeaten in 6 games in all competitions and they have won 4 of those fixtures to regain some momentum and confidence. After failing to win any of 3 games at Anfield in all competitions, Liverpool were able to beat Brighton 2-0 most recently in front of the home fans.
Florian Wirtz is expected to be available, but Alexander Isak suffered a big injury in scoring the opener at Tottenham Hotspur and is expected to be out for at least two months. Both Conor Bradley and Cody Gakpo are hoping to be available, although will need to pass late fitness tests, while Dominic Szoboszlai is suspended.
Wolves
Rob Edwards has to know that his Wolves team need to find some big upsets to give the fans any hope of survival, although most associated with the club will accept that Championship Football is likely going to be played next August. At this stage, Wolves fans will just be hoping the team do not break the record low set by Derby County after yet another home defeat to an opponent they may have expected to beat.
The side are bottom of the Premier League table and are 16 points from safety after Leeds United picked up a big win last weekend. They have a 0-1-7 away record in the top flight and Wolves have scored just twice in those fixtures, although they have conceded just 14 of the 37 Premier League goals on their travels.
Wolves have had their run of losses extended to 11 games in all competitions following the 0-2 defeat to Brentford last weekend. They may have lost 5 games in a row on their travels, but Wolves did push Arsenal all the way and were just minutes away from securing a point at the Emirates Stadium in an eventual 2-1 defeat.
Yerson Mosquera is available after serving a suspension, while Hugo Bueno is expected to be passed fit.
Head to Head
Liverpool beat Wolves by the same 2-1 scoreline in both Premier League games last season.
They have won 8 straight home League games against Wolves.
Prediction
Injuries in the forward areas and the absence of Dominic Szoboszlai are blows as far as Liverpool are concerned, but they should still have too much for a Wolves team who have been in miserable form.
Credit has to be given to the team for showing more resilience away from home where Wolves are able to sit back and look to contain threats.
There is always going to be a different onus on the team at home, but Rob Edwards will know his team can look to contain the hosts for as long as possible in this one. That almost worked at the Emirates Stadium when Wolves were minutes away from a point, but ultimately it was another setback for a team that are destined for relegation.
Wolves have conceded a lot fewer goals away from home than they have at Molineux this season and they can look to frustrate a Liverpool team that are missing a number of key attacking players through injury or suspension.
Even then, Arne Slot could be able to call on Cody Gakpo this weekend, while players like Federico Chiesa, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike give the home team plenty of quality in the final third.
Momentum is back behind Liverpool who have won 3 in a row in all competitions and who have continued to create some quality chances. You have to expect more of the same in this fixture at Anfield and Liverpool should ultimately have too much for a Wolves team that cannot be playing with a lot of confidence.
They found a route to goal at the Emirates Stadium, while 'only' losing 1-0 at Villa Park.
It is some encouragement for Rob Edwards, but his team are likely to be under the cosh for much of the afternoon and Liverpool can break them down and secure a relatively comfortable three points when all is said and done.
