Everton
David Moyes is unlikely to see the Everton board splash the cash in January, but he has to be excited about what his current squad can achieve with a bit more consistency in the second half of the Premier League season. An important three points were secured in the final match played in the 2025 calendar year and Moyes will be looking for his team to produce a fast start in 2026.
They open up at home and Everton have a 4-2-3 record at the Hill Dickinson Stadium and that has helped contribute to the team moving up into 8th place in the Premier League table. There are only 5 points between Everton and Merseyside rivals Liverpool in 4th place, but the main ambition remains earning a spot in any UEFA competition.
Everton had not won any of the previous 3 Premier League games, but the draw at Turf Moor was followed by the 0-2 win at Nottingham Forest. The side have won half of the last 6 home Premier League games played, but Everton have lost the other 3 matches in that run, including a narrow 0-1 defeat to Arsenal most recently.
Michael Keane is hoping to be available, but a number of other key players may return for the Premier League fixtures played following the FA Cup Third Round scheduled for next weekend.
Brentford
Every fan attending the New Year's Day fixtures in the Premier League will be hoping for more excitement for the rest of the calendar year and Brentford fans will be amongst those after the goalless draw with Tottenham Hotspur. It is another point on the board for Keith Andrews in what has looked like a pretty seamless transition through the first half of the campaign for a Brentford team that had been considered a dark horse relegation candidate.
Credit has to be given to everyone working at the club that in a season where two of the three newly promoted clubs are making a real effort at survival that Brentford are 9th in the table and 13 points clear of the bottom three. Some fans will be hoping they can join 'smaller' clubs like Brighton and Crystal Palace in earning a spot in Europe, but Brentford will only be focusing on improving game by game and seeing where that takes them in May.
Brentford have lost 1 of the last 5 games played in all competitions and that was in the League Cup Quarter Final at Manchester City, while they had won consecutive Premier League fixtures before the draw with Tottenham Hotspur. The away form had made for poorer reading as The Bees had been beaten in 5 in a row on their travels, but Brentford ended that run in a 0-2 win at Wolves.
The squad looks pretty settled for this long trip to the North West on Sunday.
Head to Head
Both Premier League games between Everton and Brentford ended in draws last season.
Everton had won consecutive games at Goodison Park against Brentford by the same 1-0 scoreline before the goalless draw at their previous home in November 2024.
Prediction
Results over the festive period shows there is very little between a number of clubs in the Premier League and that is certainly the case when 8th placed Everton host 9th placed Brentford.
Home advantage could be the biggest factor at play in what is expected to be a competitive fixture and the first goal is going to go a long way in deciding the outcome.
David Moyes will want Everton to produce more consistency in the second half of the season, especially at home, if they are going to push into the European places. The fans will also be demanding a serious attempt in the FA Cup after the early League Cup exit and so there are some real ambitions for Moyes to meet.
The side have won half of the last 6 at home, although Everton have faced some heavy defeats in that run too.
However, it is unlikely that Brentford are going to be able to produce the football needed to score a lot of goals here and instead will be looking to frustrate the hosts and counter.
Keith Andrews has been doing a fine job at Brentford, but his team had lost 5 away games in a row in all competitions before beating bottom club Wolves. Even in that win, the hosts had their opportunities and Everton may have just enough quality to earn a narrow win, although backing them on the Asian Handicap makes most sense with half the stake returned in the event of a draw.
