Brighton
A big Cup win will have given Brighton plenty of momentum to take into the next set of Premier League wins, although they have another tough away test coming up in the FA Cup Fourth Round. That will have to wait until February and Fabian Hurzeler's sole focus this weekend is making sure Brighton continue to push their way up the Premier League standings.
Getting back into European Football remains the objective for the manager and the players and Brighton are 11th in the Premier League table, but only 4 points behind the top five places in the Division. The Seagulls have a 5-4-1 record at the Amex Stadium and turning those draws into wins will be key for Brighton to start the push upwards.
Brighton are unbeaten in 4 games in all competitions since losing narrowly at the Emirates Stadium, although only 2 of those matches have ended in wins. They had failed to win any of 3 games at the Amex Stadium before Brighton produced a comfortable victory over Burnley most recently here.
Carlos Baleba is back from the African Cup of Nations, but Yankuba Minteh and Mats Wieffer remain doubtful.
Bournemouth
Big decisions will have to be made by the board in the weeks ahead as they try and secure Andoni Iraola's immediate future as manager of Bournemouth. However, it has been a tough few months for the club having lost key players and not being able to invest as much as the manager may have wanted, which may mean needing to leave for a more ambitious project.
The Cherries and Andoni Iraola will want to part on the best terms if they do indeed part, but there will be no chance of winning any trophies after Bournemouth were beaten in the FA Cup Third Round on Penalties at Newcastle United. They are 15th in the Premier League table and Bournemouth are not looking as likely to finish in any of the European spots as they had been a couple of months ago.
Bournemouth have won 1 of the last 13 games played in all competitions and that was thanks to Antoine Semenyo who scored with virtually his last kick in this shirt. They have not won any of the last 9 away games in all competitions, although Bournemouth have ended up drawing 3 of the last 4 in normal time.
Ryan Christie is hoping to be available, but Justin Kluivert and Enes Unal are both doubts.
Head to Head
Things were very different for Bournemouth when they beat Brighton 2-1 at the Vitality Stadium back in September.
It is Brighton who have won the last 4 when hosting this South Coast rival.
Prediction
Conditions are forecasted to be wet and windy on Monday night in this part of the South Coast, but both Brighton and Bournemouth will be looking to get the ball on the ground and play attacking, fast paced football.
Both Fabian Hurzeler and Andoni Iraola have been growing their personal reputations while overseeing Brighton and Bournemouth respectively, but expectations have also increased.
In the current models used to run these clubs, earning a spot in European competition is seen as achievable.
It is Brighton who have shown a touch more consistency than Bournemouth- losing Antoine Semenyo certainly makes it that much tougher for the visiting team, while injuries are restricting the Andoni Iraola options. His team still come forward and create chances, but the defensive vulnerabilities have been clear for all to see and that is going to offer Brighton plenty of opportunity in this one.
Fabian Hurzeler does want his Brighton team to play with joy going forward and there has been a bit more to like about them compared with Bournemouth.
The visiting are dangerous as they get forward and look to create chances, but Brighton have plenty of threat of their own and also look slightly more secure at the back.
The mental edge is also with Brighton who have beaten Bournemouth 4 times in a row at home and you have to believe The Seagulls can find enough joy in the final third to come through with a vital three points after another entertaining contest between two eye-pleasing teams.
