Burnley
Scott Parker had already stated that draws were not going to be enough to keep Burnley in the Premier League, but he must have been really disappointed on Monday night watching the performance produced at the Stadium of Light. They barely laid a glove on the hosts and Burnley were beaten 3-0, which leaves them struggling to keep in touch with the teams above them who have been picking up some important Premier League points over the last few weeks.
The heavy loss at Sunderland leaves Burnley in 19th place in the Premier League table and they are now 11 points behind Nottingham Forest in 17th place and with just fourteen League games left. The 2-4-6 record at Turf Moor has simply not been good enough in the top flight and Burnley have scored just 12 League goals here all season.
Burnley have now failed to win any of the last 15 Premier League games since securing back to back League successes at the end of October. They have at least shown some toughness and resiliency at Turf Moor where Burnley have lost 1 of the last 5 games in all competitions, even if League wins have been hard to come by.
Some of the recent injuries have been clearing up for Scott Parker, but he did not get the kind of reinforcements he may have been hoping for in the January transfer window.
West Ham United
The pressure has cooled on Nuno Espirito Santo as manager of West Ham United after some big results in January, but the month ended in a heartbreaking defeat. At half time in West London, West Ham United looked the much stronger team as they led 0-2 at Stamford Bridge, but eventually Espirito Santo's men were overwhelmed and beaten 3-2 in injury time.
Both Leeds United and Nottingham Forest failed to win this past weekend, but West Ham United are now 6 points from safety having failed to pick up anything from a strong position at Stamford Bridge. That result means West Ham United make the long journey to the North West with a 2-4-6 away record in the top flight.
West Ham United had won consecutive Premier League games against Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland before taking that commanding lead against Chelsea, but the positive run came to a conclusion. The Hammers have lost 3 of the last 4 away Premier League games and have conceded three goals in each of those away defeats.
Jean-Clair Todibo was sent off during a melee at the end of the last fixture and he will begin a suspension.
Head to Head
Burnley scored first at the London Stadium in November, but West Ham United fought back for a 3-2 win.
They are unbeaten in each of the last 3 visits to Turf Moor and West Ham United have won twice in that run by the same 1-2 scoreline.
Prediction
The day before this fixture is played, Leeds United and Nottingham Forest will play one another and so there is an opportunity for 18th placed West Ham United and 19th placed Burnley when they meet at Turf Moor.
Knowing one of those teams in the immediate places outside of the relegation zone will be dropping points should provide a motivation for both Burnley and West Ham United who know the importance of the three points that can be earned.
Without being disrespectful to Burnley, this games does feel more important for West Ham United.
Scott Parker's team were absolutely awful in the 3-0 defeat at Sunderland on Monday and there were signs that this is a club that have accepted that they will be joining Wolves in the Championship. The lack of investment in January will not have given the fans much hope and Burnley have continued to struggle with the balance needed at both ends of the field to really put some momentum together.
Of course a win could spark a positive run for Burnley, but a team that have struggled in the final third as much as they have are very difficult to trust. They have been tough to beat at home in recent weeks, but there is more of an onus on them to get forward and win this game and that may play into West Ham United's hands.
Nuno Espirito Santo has to be very disappointed his team were not able to build on a very strong first half at Stamford Bridge.
As the whistle blew to end that half, the Chelsea fans were furious and the players looked out of sync, while West Ham United had taken full advantage to lead 0-2. After back to back League wins, the manager would have hoped his team could contain the expected improvement that The Blues were going to produce, but West Ham United were overwhelmed.
The manager has to be happy with some of the attacking numbers being produced over the last month as West Ham United scramble to get closer to those teams outside of the relegation zone. He has to believe that a similar level to those produced at Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea will give West Ham United every chance of earning a win here and the investment made in January looks to be a positive.
West Ham United are not easy to trust considering they were beaten 3-0 at Wolves in early January and failed to hold onto a lead in the home defeat to Nottingham Forest.
However, the team look to have found some rhythm and they may have just enough to make odds against quotes pay out with a narrow victory at Turf Moor to really put pressure on those above them. Burnley can offer some resistance, but a desperate host may make one or two more mistakes than they have in recent home games and West Ham United's extra quality in the final third may just lead to three priceless points.
