Crystal Palace
Two big away results have just changed the narrative around this Crystal Palace team having been considered a dark horse to be dragged into the relegation scrap developing from West Ham United upwards. The three points in the M23 derby would have really pleased the fans, while Oliver Glasner looks much happier with some of the business done in the January transfer window that strengthens his squad.
Now the side have back to back home Premier League games that will give them every chance to put some real distance between themselves and the bottom three. There is also the benefit of Crystal Palace then being allowed to really put in a big effort to become the third English club to win the UEFA Conference League, which resumes this month. The Eagles have a 2-6-4 record at Selhurst Park in the top flight, but they have a chance to improve that over the next ten days and increase the 9 point gap to 18th placed West Ham United.
Crystal Palace had lost 3 games in a row in all competitions, which included an embarrassing exit in the FA Cup Third Round at non-League Macclesfield, but they have drawn at Nottingham Forest and won at Brighton this month. Now they take aim at snapping an 8 game winless run in all competitions at Selhurst Park.
Justin Devenny is hoping to be available, but Jean-Philippe Mateta will be given time to assess his knee, especially with Jorgen Strand Larsen arriving in the January transfer window.
Burnley
The fans may have become a little used to seeing Burnley struggle in their return to the Premier League and this level is proving too much for the current squad. Defeats hurt, but the loss to West Ham United on Saturday at Turf Moor feels like the final nail in the coffin as Burnley look destined to join Wolves in dropping out of the Division.
They are 19th in the Premier League table, but the loss on Saturday leaves Burnley 11 points from safety and with just 13 League games left on the schedule. The side have won just 3 games all season and so it is very difficult to see how Burnley can find a way out of their current predicament as they travel to South London with a 1-2-9 away record.
Burnley had drawn 5 of the previous 7 Premier League games before the defeat to West Ham United, but manager Scott Parker has long known his team have needed wins. They have drawn 2 of the last 4 away League games at Bournemouth and Liverpool, but Burnley looked completely devoid of confidence when being crushed 3-0 at Sunderland earlier this month.
James Ward-Prowse was unable to play against his parent club on Saturday, but will travel with the squad.
Head to Head
A competitive game ended in a narrow 0-1 defeat for Burnley when hosting Crystal Palace in early December.
They had been unbeaten in 3 visits to Selhurst Park, but that run was ended in an emphatic 3-0 defeat here in February 2024.
Prediction
Just when it looked like Crystal Palace may be slumping into a relegation dogfight, four points have been earned from a couple of away Premier League games and all seems much happier at Selhurst Park.
Even manager Oliver Glasner looked happy, which has not been the case over the last several weeks.
The board have backed the outgoing manager with some decent signings in January and Crystal Palace look like a team that may yet have a very successful end to the season. It may come down whether or not they can win the UEFA Conference League, but The Eagles are amongst the favourites in that competition and results this month may allow them to focus on Europe with the Premier League security almost secured.
They can go a long way to really easing any lingering concerns in the next several days when hosting Burnley and Wolves.
Scott Parker's team were beaten on Saturday by West Ham United at Turf Moor and that looks like the race is run as far as avoiding relegation is concerned. They have at least been more competitive in recent weeks, but Burnley continue to struggle with the balance needed at both ends of the pitch and that has ultimately let them down.
Draws are no good to them now and that means Burnley may have to open things up, which only exposes what has been a vulnerable defence. This is especially the case away from home with recent draws at Bournemouth and Liverpool as much a product of wasteful finishing from the hosts as anything Burnley have been able to do.
There is a chance that the Crystal Palace attack will follow suit, but they have looked much better with Daniel Munoz and Ismaila Sarr back in the lineup. The latter has scored twice since returning from the African Cup of Nations, while the former provides real width, and signings like Brennan Johnson and Jorgen Strand Larsen make Crystal Palace look much more effective.
Oliver Glasner's men should have too much in the final third and secure a relatively comfortable victory on the night.
