St.Pauli didn’t stand any chance last week in the 4-0 hammering by Bayer Leverkusen. They rarely moved past the half-field line, chances were scarce, and they deservedly lost. That was their second defeat in their last three Bundesliga games, and now they have a chance to bounce back against their direct relegation rivals from the bottom.
St.Pauli is second from the bottom, only two points behind Werder Bremen, so this is a massive game for them. The sides are almost evenly matched in quality, but both should be motivated to earn points.
St.Pauli won four games so far this season, with three of those coming at home. They are definitely more comfortable playing at home, where they are unbeaten in four straight games, drawing twice and winning twice. One of those wins was the impressive 2-1 win over favorites VfB Stuttgart in their most recent home game.
Werder Bremen
Werder Bremen is in deep trouble, with their winless series now stretching to 12 Bundesliga games.
On top of that, Werder Bremen failed to score in seven of their last nine Bundesliga matches and in 10 games overall, the worst record of any team this season.
Even new coach Daniel Thioune could not turn things around, with Werder Bremen suffering another expected 3-0 defeat against Bayern Munich last weekend.
However, Werder Bremen will now enter an important stretch of matches against teams from the lower part of the Bundesliga, so they still have everything in their hands. After St.Pauli, their upcoming games are against Heidenheim, Union Berlin, Mainz, and Wolfsburg.
Bad team news for Werder Bremen is the muscle injury sustained last week by their youngster, Karim Coulibaly. The defender was a bright spot recently, but is now set to miss this match.
The Betting Verdict
This is a relegation six-pointer, an important game for both sides chasing points in the battle at the bottom.
I see St.Pauli as a slightly better side, but very inconsistent. Werder Bremen simply must do more and get something here, because 12 games without a win is already putting tremendous pressure on them.
A very tricky game that can go either way. Neither side deserves full trust. I would go here with a double chance bet on Werder Bremen to at least get a valuable point against their bottom rivals.
